Dr. Gao is the Origincell Endowed Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, an adjunct professor of the Department of Bioengineering, and a principal investigator of the Center for Dialysis Innovation at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. Before joining the University of Washington in 2004, Dr. Gao worked in the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA, with which he established an extraordinary reputation as the Baxter Healthcare Corporation Chair and the Alumni Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and an adjunct professor in the Center for Biomedical Engineering and the departments of physiology and surgery between 1998 and 2004.

Dr. Gao is renowned as an award-winning scientist who specializes in cryobiology, cryopreservation engineering, artificial organs, and bio-instrument/biosensor. He has become internationally recognized over the past 30 years for his exemplary expertise. He has made great contributions and achievements in establishing novel technology and instrumentation for bio-preservation and biobanking, cellular and gene therapy, regenerative medicine, stem cell and tissue transplantation, diagnosis of diseases, treatment of end-stage multi-organ failure, in vitro fertilization, and conservation of endangered species, etc.

Dr. Gao has been serving (2016-2021) as the President-Elect, President, and Past-President of the Society for Cryobiology (the International Society for Low Temperature Biology and Medicine, founded in 1964, USA). Besides, he has been involved with multiple professional committees, panels, and review boards for national and international organizations as well as government research funding agencies. He was a Chairman of the 1996 Annual Meeting of the Society for Cryobiology, Chairman of the 2004 World Conference in Cryobiology and Cryo-medicine, and Chairman of the International Conference of Cryobiology and Biobanking in 2017. He has delivered over 200 scientific meeting presentations worldwide.

As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Gao has disseminated his findings in more than 500 peer-reviewed research articles, including over 250 full journal papers, over 35 book chapters, and many patents. He has served in various editorial roles for multiple scientific journals, such as the Deputy Editor of the Biopreservation and Biobanking journal and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Electronics Cooling and Thermal Control, and the Editorial Board Member of nine other scientific journals.

An alumnus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, China, Dr. Gao earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1983. He concluded his studies at the Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in mechanical engineering in 1991.

Over his 30 years of academic and research career, Gao has gained worldwide recognition, including national or international honors and awards: the Member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences (USA), Fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Fellow of Society for Cryobiology with the Basil Luyet Medal, American Heart Association Award, American Cancer Society Award, Asian American Engineer of the Year 2013 Award, Bill-Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Research Award, Whitaker Foundation Young Investigator Award, Washington Foundation Innovation Award, International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories Special Service Award, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, etc. The "Dayong Gao Young Investigator Award" was named and established by the Society for Cryobiology to recognize the most outstanding early-career cryobiologist or cryo-biomedical engineer worldwide every year since 2019. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gao has been featured in the 62nd and 63rd editions of Who's Who in America.
