Dr. Rietschel is an esteemed dermatologist who was active as the chairman of the dermatology section of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care Systems. The former acting section head of dermatology at the University of Arizona's school of medicine, he taught various dermatological courses for four years and flourished as the head of the department for two years. Additionally, Dr. Rietschel held faculty appointments at Emory University in Atlanta as an associate professor and the acting chairman of dermatology in addition to Louisiana State University and Tulane University as a clinical professor of dermatology. He retired in 2008.
Renowned for his expertise in contact dermatitis, Dr. Rietschel retired as a major of the U.S. Army Medical Corps after serving between 1971 and 1979. During this time, he refined his skills as a staff dermatologist at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He was subsequently appointed as the acting Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Emory from 1984-1985 and Chairman of Dermatology at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans from 1990-2004. Dr. Rietschel is a co-author of three editions "Fisher's Contact Dermatitis" as well as numerous articles published in various professional journals.
Dr. Rietschel completed his undergraduate studies at North Texas State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1968. He later obtained a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1972, which was followed by an internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco and a residency in dermatology at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. As a medical student in the military, he was notably assigned to working on soldiers with friction blisters, which inspired him to specialize in dermatology. Moreover, Dr. Rietschel is board-certified through the American Board of Dermatology.
An elected fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dr. Rietschel held administrative positions with the North America Contact Dermatitis Group and was in charge of the committee that created the American Contact Dermatitis Society and served as its first Secretary-Treasurer and later its President. Furthermore, he was a prominent member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the American Dermatological Association.
