After earning a degree in early childhood education, Doc Powell developed a profound interest in the art of drumming as expressed in African cultures. He immediately integrated the craft into his life and excelled in the area. Doc Powell subsequently began his career as a drummer and a percussionist at the Wo-se Theater for African Heritage Dancers and Drummers.
For 60 years, Doc Powell has served as the artistic director of the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers. In his career, he has also performed as a singer with the United Methodist Church Band and Choir. In his present position, Doc Powell has flourished as one of the lead drummers of a cultural activity, and his team holds annual performances on Sundays from May 1st to October 31st at a park in Washington.
For his exemplary efforts as a drummer in the community, Doc Powell was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington, D.C. Black Community. Over the years, he has learned about 30 different rhythms and 25 different chants. Doc Powell has performed with a talented and well-versed group of musicians throughout his career.
Doc Powell has attributed his professional success to influential master drummers who taught him the craft. In addition to his artistic efforts in drumming, he also worked with the National Education Association as a business analyst for more than 30 years. Looking toward the future, Doc Powell anticipates on expanding the cultural impact of his group while continuing to perform.
