Dr. Tim M. Ridgway Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medical Education

Dr. Ridgway prepares the next generation of medical students through his roles with the University of South Dakota School of Medicine



    BRANDON, SD, December 15, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Tim M. Ridgway has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing upon a lifelong desire to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Ridgway earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and biology from Augustana College in 1980. Four years later, he received a Doctor of Medicine from the School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota in 1984 before completing an internship at McKennan Hospital in 1985, as well as a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology through the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1991. While at the Mayo Clinic, he witnessed gastroenterologists on staff and decided to pursue that aspect of medicine.

In 2012, Dr. Ridgway became the director of the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit at the local Veterans Administration Hospital. Throughout his career, he has also served in varying positions with the School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota, including as Sioux Falls campus dean, dean of faculty affairs, executive dean and professor of medicine. Today, he works as vice president for health affairs and dean. In his dual academic roles, he oversees all operations for the School of Health Sciences and manages the research endeavors, education and service components.

Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Ridgway aligns himself with the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association and the South Dakota State Medical Association. He is also recognized as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Alongside his work at the university, he gives back as a volunteer with the local chapters of the United Way.

In light of his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Ridgway has been honored many times, earning a Distinguished Alumnus Award through the Sanford School of Medicine in 2017, a Humanism and Medicine Award through the University of South Dakota in 2013, a Teacher of the Year Award through the American College of Physicians in 2016, a Top Gastroenterologist Award in Sioux Falls from the International Association of Healthcare Professionals between 2018 and 2020, and a Presidential Award through the South Dakota State Medical Association in 2017. Most recently, he received an Alumni Award from Augustana University in 2020. Looking ahead, Dr. Ridgway intends to further establish the university's standing within the community.
