Dan Welcher Inducted into Marquis Who's Who

A respected member of the musical community for five decades, Mr. Welcher retired from his career in academia as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin in 2019. His tenure in education began as an assistant professor of music at the University of Louisville in 1973. After five years, he relocated to Texas, where he would spend nearly 45 years. Additionally, Mr. Welcher excelled as a visiting professor of composition at his alma mater, the Eastman School of Music, from 1985 to 1986.

Having earned renown as a talented bassoonist, Mr. Welcher served as the composer in residence at the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra between 1990 and 1993, funded by Meet the Composer Inc. and several other organizations. He also directed the New Music Ensemble at the University of Texas from 1978 until 2019, was a music panelist for the Texas Commission on the Arts in Austin from 1983 to 1985, and earned distinction as Assistant Conductor for the Austin Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to 1990. During the course of his distinguished career, he has composed over 150 works. Mr. Welcher's music has appeared on approximately 35 commercial CD recordings. His music has been performed by over 50 professional orchestras, and numerous soloists and ensembles, and is published primarily by Theodore Presser, Inc.

Mr. Welcher distinguished himself as an Artist Faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival between 1976 and 1991, where he performed as Principal Bassoonist of the Aspen Chamber Symphony and taught both bassoon and composition. He has been a frequent speaker in his field and enjoyed 10 years as a radio host for the award-winning weekly radio show "Knowing the Score," which aired on KMFA-FM in Austin from 1999 to 2009. Mr. Welcher also hosted a second weekly radio show in Austin, "From the Butler School of Music," at the University of Texas's Butler School of Music.

Mr. Welcher received a Bachelor of Music With High Distinction degree, where he concentrated on Performance on the bassoon, at the Eastman School of Music in 1969. He also attained a Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School during the same year. Mr. Welcher subsequently earned a Master of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music in 1972, focusing on composition and theory. While pursuing his studies, he served for three years in the U.S. Army on active duty between 1969 and 1972, where he played in the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point, New York.

A respected member of several industry-related organizations during his career, Mr. Welcher continues his affiliation with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He is also a past vice president of the Texas Composer's Forum, a former board director of Chamber Music America, and an award recipient of ASCAP.

As a testament to his success and longevity, Mr. Welcher was bestowed with an Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012, was named to the Austin Arts Hall of Fame, and received three Composers Award grants from the National Endowment of the Arts. In 1998, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and was awarded a residency at the Bellagio Foundation in Italy. He also received multiple residencies from the MacDowell Colony and the Corporation at Yaddo. Among other honors, he was also presented with the Grand Prize from the International Horn Society competition contest and First Prize in the American Bandmasters' Association Ostwald Award. competition. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Welcher has been cited in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America, the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment, and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
