Dr. Rajendra Raghow Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medical Research and Education

Dr. Raghow studies molecular mechanisms of gene expression at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center

MEMPHIS, TN, December 22, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Rajendra Raghow has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing upon more than four decades of expertise in medical research and education, Dr. Raghow excels as a Tenured Professor of Pharmacology and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Over the course of his career, he has maintained his research focus on molecular biology of gene expression as related to mechanisms of craniofacial development, tissue repair and regeneration, and pathophysiology of obesity and hyperlipidemia. While maintaining his Tenured Professorship at the UTHSC, Dr. Raghow was concurrently honored with a Senior Research Career Scientist appointment by the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than two decades. As a result, Dr. Raghow ran a well-funded research laboratory at the Memphis VA Medical Center until 2019.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Raghow pursued his undergraduate education at Punjab University, Chandigarh, India earning a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in 1968 and a Master of Science (Honors) in biology in 1969. He graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in biochemistry from Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, in 1974. Subsequently, as a Leon Journey Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Raghow pursued research in molecular virology at Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, from 1976-1978, followed by service as a Junior Faculty. Dr. Raghow was recruited to the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, UTHSC, in 1982 as an Assistant Professor where he rose through the ranks to become a Tenured Full Professor in 1990. Dr. Raghow has served at UTHSC continuously since 1982 except for a Sabbatical during 1993-93, when he was an American Cancer Society Visiting Scholar at the University of California San Diego. In order to serve the scientific community at large, Dr. Raghow has been an active member of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the American Society of Microbiology and Metabolomics Association of North America.

In recognition of his research expertise and accomplishments, Dr. Raghow has been invited to serve on several Peer Review Panels of federal research funding agencies (National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation) and private philanthropic foundations (American Cancer Society and American Heart Association) as well as appointed to the editorial boards of prestigious journals, including Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, the World Journal of Diabetes and PLoS One. Along with other scholars in the field, Dr. Raghow has made key contributions to the area of gene expression by publishing original articles such as "Regulation of Sendai Virus Transcription: Evidence for a Single Promoter in Vivo", "Pre-translational Regulation of Biosynthesis of Type I Collagen, Fibronectin and a 50 kDa Non-Collagenous Extracellular Polypeptide by Dexamethasone in Rat Fibroblasts", "Patients Experiencing Statin-induced Myalgia Exhibit a unique Program of Gene Expression Following Statin Re-challenge", and "Sex-specific Differences in Hepatica Steatosis in Obese Spontaneously Hypertensive (SHROB) Rats". Looking toward to the future, Dr. Raghow intends to experience a continued success of his curiosity-driven research career.
