With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Hicks has found success as a professor in the applied business communication program in the College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University, where she began teaching in 1998. From 1987 to 1997, she served as a professor at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. To remain abreast of developments in her areas of interest, Dr. Hicks holds professional affiliations with a number of relevant organizations, including the Association for Business Communication, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Delta Pi Epsilon. Her research record includes over 18 peer-reviewed journal article publications, one textbook, countless presentations, and training/consulting work.
Civically engaged as well, Dr. Hicks provides training in business writing, employment communication, and presentation skills. She also volunteers her professional services at Dégagé Ministries in Grand Rapids. As a further testament to her success and longevity in the field, she was presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award by Central Michigan University in 2004, who also honored her with the Student Choice Award in 2012. She has also been awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Business Administration in 2017 and 2001, as well as the Dean's Teaching Award in 2000. Dr. Hicks attributes her success to the connections she fosters with her students, as well as her enthusiasm for the subjects she teaches.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Dr. Hicks pursued an education at Central Michigan University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in business education in 1986. Continuing her studies at Central Michigan University, she subsequently obtained a Master's degree in business education in 1989. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in higher adult and continuing education from Michigan State University in 1994. Looking towards the future, Dr. Hicks intends to continue teaching at Central Michigan University.
