HACKENSACK, NJ, January 06, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mildred A. Schwartz with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Schwartz celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Schwartz began her academic career as an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Alberta in Calgary, now the University of Calgary. Later, she taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago, becoming a professor emerita of sociology in 1998 after a three-decade tenure. On moving to the east coast, she became a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Sociology at New York University until 2020. As her interests in political parties and movements, regionalism, national identity, and organizations developed, often in the context of Canada-US comparisons, she was able to use her skills in other settings. Dr. Schwartz served as a study director at the National Opinion Research Center in Chicago and a program director at the National Science Foundation in Virginia. Since 2019, Dr. Schwartz continues her research interests, now writing as an independent researcher.

Dr. Schwartz received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in sociology at the University of Toronto in 1954 and 1956, respectively. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology by Columbia University in 1965. She remains active in several professional associations reflecting her research interests. Among them is the Social Science of History Association, where she served as the president, the American Sociological Association, the Canadian Political Science Association, the American Political Science Association, where she has been on the nominating committee, and the Association for Canadian Studies in the United State as a member of the executive committee. After election to the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research in 1984, she served as Council chair, 1986-87.

Dr. Schwartz's scholarly accomplishments have been recognized through awards, prizes, and invitations from universities to deliver lectures or be a visiting professor. She was the first recipient of the Thomas O. Enders Fellowship, hosted at the University of Calgary, in 1998-99. While there, she was a conference honoree and the recipient of a Festschrift, "Regionalism and Political Parties", edited by Lisa Young and Keith Archer, 2002. Dr. Schwartz was a visiting professor at Harvard University and invited to lecture at multiple national and international universities, including Princeton University, Duke University and Cambridge University. An award-wining author, Dr. Schwartz has published 65 scholarly articles and 13 books, either solely, co-authored, or as edited volumes. Two monographs, "Public Opinion and Canadian Identity" and "Politics and Territory: The Sociology of Regional Persistence in Canada" represent particularly influential work. Her most recent book, co-authored with Raymond Tatalovich, is "The Rise and Fall of Moral Conflicts in the United States and Canada."

Recognition of her professional stature was been acknowledged in many ways. One is by her election as an Associate Fellow, Center for Great Plains Studies in 1997. Dr. Schwartz received the Seymour Martin Lipset Best Book Award from the Canadian Politics Section of the American Political Science Association in 2011 for "Party Movements in the United States and Canada: Strategies of Persistence." Her alma mater, University College, University of Toronto, gave her an Alumni of Influence Award in 2018. She received the Donner Medal in Canadian Studies in 2019, presented biennially by the Association of Canadian Studies in the US (ACSUS) for "distinguished achievement, scholarship and program innovation in Canadian studies in the US." A network fellowship (non-residential) was awarded by the Edward J. Safra Center for Ethics, Harvard University, 2012-13. Her role as a scholar of Canadian studies was acknowledged when the Mildred A. Schwartz Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes scholars who have made exemplary contributions to the study of Canadian politics, was named after her. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Schwartz has been cited in the 58th and 59th editions of Who's Who in America and the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
