A nationally recognized innovator and leader in medical education and a Board certified nephrologist, Dr. Morrison has been a faculty member at University of Pennsylvania for more than four decades. She worked to redefine excellence in medical education serving as an exemplary teacher, mentor and advisor to countless students and colleagues. During that time, for 23 years, Dr. Morrison led the Perelman School of Medicine to its sustained eminence in medical education, ranking consistently in the top five medical schools in the country. For her educational accomplishments, she was the inaugural appointment to a new endowed chair, the William Maul Measey President's Distinguished Professor in Medical Education. She is presently the Executive Director, Innovation Center for On-Line Medical Education and Special Advisor to the EVP/Dean in the Perelman School of Medicine.
Her initial role as the Director of the Renal Outpatient Program and Dialysis Program involved patient care, and the training and educating of renal fellows and house staff at the Hospital of the University of PENN. Recognition of her outstanding ability to teach resulted in her medical career expanding into educational activities as the Associate Chairman of the Department of Medicine for Student Education (1986-96) and into the School of Medicine as the Chair of the Admissions Committee (1983-88), Chair of the Curriculum Committee (1990-92), and Associate Dean for Clinical Curriculum (1991-95).
Dr. Morrison was appointed the Vice Dean for Education and Director of the Academic Program Office in 1995, the first such position at University of PENN School of Medicine, and tasked with developing and implementing a medical education program for preparing students to be twenty first century physicians. She was instrumental and responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of a nationally recognized and innovative four year curriculum. Named Curriculum 2000T, it was a modular curriculum that integrated basic sciences, clinical medicine and humanism and professionalism with a pedagogy that emphasized case based learning in small group settings. Its technological counterpart, Virtual Curriculum 2000 (VC 2000T), captured all lectures and small group discussions, and enabled students to access all slides, audio and video on demand. In 1997 when it was implemented, this curriculum model was unique; it has since become a curriculum model adapted nationally by many institutions.
In 2010, she received the title of Senior Vice Dean, the first woman to hold that title in the school of medicine. She spearheaded a plan to create the MD + degree program which allowed medical students during medical school to pursue and graduate with multiple degrees. Nine Master's Degree programs and 10 Certificate programs were made available to students. She championed the need for a 21st century medical education facility for both students and faculty. Her advocacy and tireless effort resulted in the 60,000 square foot Henry A. Jordan M'62 School of Medicine medical education center embedded into the University of Penn Health System's active clinical care and translational research facilities in 2015.
Dr. Morrison studied at Boston University, receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Chemistry, magna cum laude, in 1967, and a Doctor of Medicine (MD degree) from University of Pennsylvania in 1971. She completed an internal medicine internship/residency at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts and Georgetown University Hospital, and spent an additional year serving as a Staff Associate at the NHLBI in Bethesda, Maryland before returning to University of Pennsylvania to complete a Nephrology Fellowship. Following that, she established and directed the outpatient dialysis and ESRD (end stage renal disease) program at the Hospital of the University of PENN (HUP) as she progressed from Assistant to full Professor. She is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow in the American Society of Nephrology (FASN).
During her academic career she has served as principal investigator and co-principal investigator for grants and contracts totaling close to 11 million dollars. She has been a director, co-director, leader and participant of numerous school and national workshops, symposia and conferences as well. Widely published, she has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles to various prominent publications, contributed reviews, abstracts, and chapters to books, and maintained involvement with reviewing for numerous peer reviewed journals. She played a major leadership role in the formation of CDIM (clerkships directors of internal medicine), and served as president of the organization in 1994-95. With strong support from the Association of Professors of Medicine, CDIM developed and established the initial core competencies for all accredited US internal medicine clerkships. She is a Trustee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CCP), a member of the American Society of Nephrology and Southeastern National Kidney Foundation, and a past Women's Liaison Officer of the AAMC.
Dr. Morrison has received numerous awards in recognition for her accomplishments: the most prestigious education teaching award given by University of PENN, the Christian R. and Mary F.. Lindback Award in 1988; the CDIM Outstanding Education Development Award; and Daniel C. Tosteson Leadership Award in Medical Education from Harvard Medical School. In 2018, she received the AAMC Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. From the School of Medicine, Dr Morrison received the Distinguished Alumni Award, the Elizabeth Kirk Rose Women in Medicine Award and the Perelman School of Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr Morrison was the first woman and only the fourth person to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
