Mr. Owens is the successful owner and director of the Owens Arts Place Museum. Established in 2005, the boutique, fine arts institution is located in the residential section of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and serves as the first and only example of its kind in Logan County, Oklahoma. Under the auspices of the museum, Mr. Owens acquires, organizes and exhibits fine art paintings and sculptures of local artists. He also maintains involvement in the local community through his participation with various cultural activities and by collaborating with local public schools and senior citizens.
A professor emeritus of the University of Central Oklahoma, Mr. Owens enjoyed a tenured career teaching in the college of fine arts for 25 years between 1980 and 2005. Previously, he served as the art department chairperson at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, for nearly 15 years, beginning in 1966. A remarkable artist, Mr. Owens' paintings and sculptures have been featured in numerous one-man shows at such locations as Langston University, the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and the Art Association of Oklahoma City. Likewise, they have been exhibited in group shows throughout the Midwest, and are represented within the official state collection of Oklahoma. Currently, he works in his studio in Guthrie where he fabricates sculpture pieces from scrap metal.
Prior to attending college, Mr. Owens served for two years in the U.S. Army in Germany between 1953 and 1955. He was subsequently accepted to Langston University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in art education in 1959. Wallace was employed at Lockheed Missile in Sunnyvale, CA from 1962 to 1964. He worked at night and studied electronics during the day. At Lockheed, he worked as an electronics technician on the Gemini project. Continuing his education, Mr. Owens earned a Master of Arts in education at Central State University in 1965 and a Master of Fine Art at the Instituto Allende, a visual arts school in Mexico, in 1966. He also completed postgraduate coursework at North Texas State University from 1970 to 1971.
Mr. Owens' inspiration to become an artist began to take shape while overseas in Germany, where he had the opportunity to experience a more European perspective. He has since been fortunate to continue traveling to many different parts of the world, which further developed his passion and expertise as a painter and sculptor, and enabled him to share his experiences with the many young artists he had the pleasure of teaching. To support his educational endeavors, Mr. Owens has been a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the Higher Education Alumni Council. He is also a member of Lions Club International.
During the summer of 1970, Mr. Owens was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Rome. In 1973, he secured a study tour grant to study at the African American Institute, an international education organization headquartered in New York City that is dedicated to advancing engagement between Africa and the U.S. He was inducted into the Ntu Art Association Hall of fame in 2010 in Oklahoma City. Wallace was also inducted into the Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame in 2016. He has travelled extensively throughout South Africa and Greece. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Owens has been included in the sixth and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 20th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
