Dr. Smith is an emeritus professor and emeritus dean of the University of Mississippi, where he taught mechanical engineering for more than 35 years. Best known for his research resulting in the identification of an anomalous refraction maxima phenomenon, he has been extensively published in various professional publications, and is the former editor of numerous books and journals, including the Journal of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Dr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, as well as a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in aerospace engineering.

Dr. Smith initially entered the industry as an associate engineer with the Glenn L. Martin Company, after which he joined Western Electric Company in the late 1950s. From 1958 until 1962, he taught at North Carolina State University, where he rose from an instructor to an assistant professor, while concurrently serving as a member of the technical staff at the Burlington, North Carolina, office of Bell Telephone Laboratories. In 1962, he accepted the role of a research project engineer on behalf of RTI International, after which he departed in 1966 to become the research supervisor for Sverdrup/ARO Inc. at Arnolds Air Force Base. Dr. Smith continued his academic career as adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee Space Institute, and shifted his focus entirely to teaching and academic administration in 1979, whereupon he joined the University of Mississippi as the dean of engineering and a professor of mechanical engineering.

Dr. Smith was granted emeritus dean status in 2000, and emeritus professor status in 2008. In 2018, he was inducted into the North Carolina State University Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department Hall of Fame, placing a capstone on a career suffused with accolades from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Sigma Pi International, and others. He has been an invited speaker, chair and officer of numerous conferences and symposia, including an appointment as the general chairperson of the 17th Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics (AIAA), the 14th Southeastern Conference on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and the Third International Conference on Hydroscience and Engineering in Berlin. Dr. Smith has held more than a dozen leadership positions in AIAA subcommittees, served as the president of the Northeast Mississippi Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
