With more than 45 years of experience in the field of engineering, Dr. Stedinger celebrates a career defined by a dedication to seeing undergraduates and his graduate students succeed. Embarking upon his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in applied mathematics from the University of California Berkeley in 1972, and went on to Harvard University, where he obtained his Master of Science two years later. Whilst pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy in environmental systems engineering at Harvard, he continued his studies as a research assistant and teaching fellow from 1974 to 1977.
Dr. Stedinger proceeded to join the faculty of Cornell University as an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, where he rose through the ranks to the status of Dwight C. Baum Professor of Engineering. He has spent his sabbaticals engaged in important civic works, working as a hydrologist with the United States Geological Survey in 1983 and 2010, with the United States Army Corp of Engineers in 1999 and 2005, and with the Vienna University of Technology in 2017. Dr. Stedinger additionally consulted with the Pacific Electric & Gas Company from 1989 to 1998. He has been a prolific contributor to scientific professional journals.
For his many achievements, Dr. Stedinger has been the recipient of various accolades and honors, including the Julian Hinds (1997) and Chow (2014) Awards of the American Soc of Civil Engineers, winning the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water in 2004, and American Geophysical Union Fellow (2000). Dr. Stedinger is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineer, and was elected as a Distinguished Member in 2013. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2014.
Adjacent to his formal career, Dr. Stedinger has been a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America since 1988. His avocations include bicycling, camping, hiking, and birdwatching. He has been married to his loving wife, Robin, for almost 50 years, and together they are the proud parents of two successful children.
