Having garnered a laudable reputation as an emeritus professor and senior honorary research fellow of the University of Western Australia, Dr. Oxnard is a renowned anatomist, anthropologist and evolutionary biologist. Teaching various courses in anatomy, anthropology, evolution, forensic science and medicine until his retirement in 1998, he was also the founding director of the Center for Human Biology on campus between 1988 and 1999 and the Founding President of the Australasian Society for Human Biology, also in 1988. He has a three year visiting appointment as a Leverhulme professor at the University College of London and the University of Liverpool from 2000 to 2003. At the University of Western Australia, he began an additional appointment as an adjunct professor of forensic science. Dr. Oxnard's tenure in academia, which dates back to 1962, when he first began lecturing at the University of Birmingham, has also included appointments in the U.S. as a professor of anatomy, anthropology and evolutionary biology and the dean of the college at the University of Chicago. This was followed by appointments as university professor, one of only four in the university, professor of anatomy and biology and dean of the graduate school at the University of Southern California between 1966 and 1987.

Throughout his extensive academic career, Dr. Oxnard taught and supervised numerous graduate students, was a visiting scholar, honorary professor and frequent lecturer at various institutions both nationally and abroad. He also conducted extensive research and became a prolific author. As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Oxnard notably studied anatomical dissection and bone measurement, morphometrics of bones and brains, bone/joint/muscle biomechanics, mathematical mimicry of individual lineages and species trees, as well as various clinical problems such as vitamin B12 deficiency, osteoporosis and iodine deficiency. More recently, he has begun forensic studies of bone.

He has notably received over $5 million in research grants to conduct his research during his tenure of academic appointments, and more than $2 million during his period of "so-called" retirement. He has contributed multiple scholarly articles to support his work in various anatomical and anthropological and medical journals. Additionally, he has authored over 20 scholarly books, including "Ghostly Muscles, Wrinkled Brains, Heresies and Hobbits" in 2008, "Endemic Cretinism" in 2011, and "Scientific Bases of Human Anatomy" in 2015. Additionally, Dr. Oxnard was an Encyclopedia Britannica committee member for eight years, beginning in 1991.

An avid civic advocate, Dr. Oxnard enjoyed participating in his community during the latter part of his career, serving on the board of directors of the Western Australian Institute for Child Health and on the electoral board of Freemantle Hospital. To support his career, he has been aligned with several prominent professional organizations. Most notably, Dr. Oxnard is an elected fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Southern California Academy of Sciences. He is also an honorary life member of Chicago Academy of Sciences and is a past president of the Australasian Society for Human Biology and the Australia and New Zealand Anatomical Society.

A native of Durham, England, Dr. Oxnard pursued an education at the University of Birmingham, attaining a Bachelor of Science, with first class honors, in 1955, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1958, a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine in 1962 and a Doctor of Science (in science and engineering) in 1975. Additional educational pursuits to his credit have included medical internships at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham between 1958 and 1959 and a research fellowship at the University of Birmingham between 1959 and 1962. He secured numerous grants during his career from such organizations as the Agricultural Research Council in the UK, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health in the USA and Australia, the Raine Foundation, the National Health and Medical Foundation and the Australian Research Foundation. Dr. Oxnard has been acknowledged with a Book Award from the Hong Kong Council in 1984. Among other awards, he was the recipient of the Charles Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Physical Anthropology in 2001 and the Chancellor's Medal from the University of Western Australia in 2008.
