Dr. Felitti is a respected Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California and president of the California Institute of Preventive Medicine. He is renowned for his research contributions to the underlying causes of severe obesity and as the co-primary investigator of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, which established links between complex trauma history, obesity, and worsened biomedical outcomes. He is additionally notable for his development of psychological supports for supplemented absolute fasting. Dr. Felitti's interest in medicine emerged as a child, as he was raised in a family of doctors and independently studied bacteriology at a young age.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College, Dr. Felitti completed two years of postgraduate coursework in bacteriology at the University of Minnesota. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962, remaining in the Johns Hopkins division of the Baltimore City Hospital as an intern and medical fellow over the next five years, except for 2 years as Captain in the Army Medical Corps. In 1967, Dr. Felitti was designated as a senior resident in medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital.

Dr. Felitti accepted a position with Kaiser Permanente in 1968, and maintained an active practice for a half-century with Kaiser Permanente until 2018. In 1975, he established Kaiser Permanente's Department of Preventive Medicine in San Diego, operating as the chairman for more than 25 years. Dr. Felitti would also serve two terms as an elected Director on the Board of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente). He is now Partner Emeritus of that organization.

Dr. Felitti has been a member of the medical faculty at the University of California since 1982. He has written or co-authored more than 150 articles and scientific papers published in medical journals. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee on Women's Services and the Healthy People 2020 Committee for the United States Department of Health and Human Services. He has additionally consulted for the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine Gulf War Committee, the American Psychiatric Association's Task Force on Early Childhood Violence, and the International Academic Board of Trauma und Gewalt, amongst others. Dr. Felitti is a senior editor of The Permanente Journal and a senior reviewer for the 2020 California Surgeon General's Report. Dr. Felitti is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Felitti is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee on Women's Services and the Healthy People 2020 Committee of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. He has additionally consulted to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine Gulf War Committee, the American Psychiatric Association's Task Force on Early Childhood Violence and the International Academic Board of Trauma, amongst others.

In recognition of the industry-shaping nature of his public health work through the ACE Study, he was honored with the McAllister Award for Advancing Trauma Informed Care. and nominated for the Lasker Award for his ongoing contributions. Dr. Felitti is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Sandoz Annual Nutrition Research Award for his work on Obesity. He has also received the NPEIV Paul Fink Interpersonal Violence Prevention Award, the Family Justice Center Lifetime Achievement Award and the HealthSpottr Impact Award.
