The first in her family to work in the field of health care, Mrs. Marcus had found success as a physician assistant for nearly 30 years before retiring from the Forsyth County Department of Public Health in Winston-Salem in 2011. During this time, she provided support in the Clinics, including the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic, the Family Planning Clinic and later, as a supervisor for the Family Planning Clinic. Mrs. Marcus previously held roles in Winston-Salem as a physician assistant with Novant Health, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Planned Parenthood of Triad and Forsyth County Mental Health.
Additionally, it was Mrs. Marcus pleasure to serve on the health committee of the Forsyth Early Childhood Partnership from 1999 to 2000, as part of her field practicum for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) Master's of Public Health Program. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, she began her career as an alcohol counselor trainee at the Alcohol Education Center in High Point, North Carolina between 1976 and 1978. Notably, Mrs. Marcus particularly enjoyed working with female patients that required prenatal care, as she felt incredibly rewarded when they would return to her after their babies were born. Also, Mrs. Marcus said that witnessing improvements in one's mental, emotional and physical health added to her purpose and fulfillment in life.
As a contributor to her community, Mrs. Marcus was honored to serve as the church health leader, in 2003 for about two years and at other times, as a member of the health ministry team at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist (S.D.A.) Church, in Winston-Salem, NC. She started with the church's health ministry during her active years, working as a physician assistant and continues until the present time. She was appointed as a member of the Forsyth County Healthy Communities Coalition from 2003-2006. Initially obtaining an undergraduate degree in biology at Washington Adventist University (Columbia Union College) in 1972, she subsequently accrued a physician assistant certificate at Wake Forest School of Medicine, Physician Assistant Program in 1976. Years later, Mrs. Marcus graduated with a Master of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000.
Mrs. Marcus wants others to know about her gratefulness to the Lord for His guidance and ongoing support throughout her career. Also, that she gives praises to God for many opportunities He has given her to learn and serve others. Mrs. Marcus would be remiss if she did not also credit her success to the support of her parents, husband, and children. Mrs. Marcus said that her parents and mentors at her home church modeled servant leadership which emphasized "treating others as you would like to be treated, with respect and consideration". In 2012, she was recognized for her hard work and dedication with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mrs. Marcus has been featured in the 60th edition of Who's Who in America and the fifth edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
