Michael C. Barris, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Medicine and Education

Dr. Barris is a former professor of optometry at Nova Southeastern University



    FREDONIA, NY, January 28, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael C. Barris, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Barris celebrates a career in ophthalmology and education spanning more than three decades. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester and initially planned to pursue a career in clinical medicine with early professional experience working in inpatient psychiatric care with severely-impaired patients and rare diagnoses. In 1976, Dr. Barris was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the City University of New York and completed a three-year fellowship in ophthalmology at the University of Florida.

After serving as an adjunct instructor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Barris accepted an assistant professorship at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico where he remained from 1983 to 1988. He returned to the mainland in 1989 for a research assistantship at Queens College, City University of New York, and joined the faculty at Michigan State University in 1990 as an assistant professor of internal medicine. From 1996 until his retirement in 1998, Dr. Barris was an assistant professor of optometry at Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Barris has published 43 papers in journals including Documenta Ophthalmologica, the Annals of Neurology, the Journal of Physiology, and the American Journal of Physiology, among others. His research emphasizes the importance of understanding underlying physiological causes of disease, and much of his work is still quoted decades after publication. He is a former research fellow of Fight-for-Sight and the National Eye Institute and a grantee of the National Society to Prevent Blindness and the American Cancer Society.

In his retirement, Dr. Barris remains active as a reviewer for the journal Optometry and Vision Science and is a member of the Crowdfight COVID-19 initiative. He has been profiled in previous editions of Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest and was professionally affiliated with the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Optical Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is passionate about opera and currently serves as a village trustee with plans to run for a second term in 2021.
