Hailing from a small town in Minnesota, Dr. Irish originally did not have a plan for his life. However, he continued his education to better himself and ended up falling in love with the fields of archaeology and anthropology. After earning a Bachelor of Science in general anthropology and a Master of Science in anthropology from Minnesota State University in 1980 and 1984, respectively, Dr. Irish graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from Arizona State University in 1993 and established himself in the field as an archeologist and assistant with The Louis Berger Group soon thereafter.

Two years later, Dr. Irish began working in the field of academia as a visiting assistant professor at the University of New Mexico before flourishing with the University of Alaska during the late-1990s. Over the years, he has gained valuable expertise in the field as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor emeritus and chairman of the department of anthropology. Drawing upon his considerable expertise, he currently excels as a professor at Liverpool John Moores University. In addition to teaching biological anthropology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising Ph.D. students, and conducting breakthrough anthropological research, Dr. Irish supervises 15 other staff members as Subject Leader of the Anthropology and Archaeology subject group.

Throughout his career thus far, Dr. Irish has co-authored a plethora of articles, including "Do dental nonmetric traits actually work as proxies for neutral genomic data? Some answers from continental and global-level analyses," which was published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology and "Dental morphology and the phylogenetic 'place' of Australopithecus sediba," that was published in Science. Moreover, he has also written such articles as "The Iberomaurusian enigma: North African progenitor or dead end?," which was published in the Journal of Human Evolution. Alongside his considerable research, Dr. Irish has obtained hundreds of thousands in grant funding over the years and remains active with the British Museum, the Polish Research Center and the Leverhulme Trust.

Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Irish has been affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology, the Dental Anthropology Association, the Sudan Archaeological Research Society and the International Commission of the Later Prehistory of Northeastern Africa, to name a few. Outside of his primary responsibilities, he has assisted in the creation of the human evolution gallery exhibit at the World Museum in Liverpool. For his vast array of professional achievements, he has been recognized with the Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Social and Economic Engagement through Liverpool John Moores University in 2019 and having one of his current papers under review for publication – a paper that he deems as one of the most important of his career.
