Dr. Leon Gleser Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Education

Dr. Gleser specializes in statistics in his role as professor emeritus with the University of Pittsburgh



    PITTSBURGH, PA, January 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Leon Gleser has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Originally intending on becoming a scientist, Dr. Gleser became interested in mathematics throughout the course of his education. After earning a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Chicago and a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University during the early 1960s, he accepted a position with Columbia University as an assistant professor of mathematics and statistics. Over the next 25 years, he gained valuable expertise in the field through roles of increasing responsibility with the Johns Hopkins University and Purdue University. During that time, Dr. Gleser also worked as a visiting research fellow for the Educational Testing Service and as a visiting professor in the department of biostatistics at Harvard University's School of Public Health. In 1989, Dr. Gleser accepted a position as Professor of Statistics at the University of Pittsburgh, serving until 2014, at which point he gained emeritus status. He also served as a visiting mathematical statistician at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gleser has published numerous research papers and has co-authored or co-edited several books, including "Probability Models and Applications, 2nd Edition" and "Contributions to Probability and Statistics: Essays in Honor of Ingram Olkin," His research has been supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Gleser has also served on the editorial boards of The Journal of the American Statistical Association, Psychometrika, Matrix Analysis and Applications (SIAM) and Statistical Science, and was Executive Editor for Statistical Science 1997-2000. Because of his accomplishments, Dr. Gleser has been elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association, of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of the Royal Statistical Society (United Kingdom). In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of helping countless students over the years and obtaining the Provost Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the University of Pittsburgh. In retirement, he maintains interest in his field, his department and his students.
