Dr. Henry is a professor emeritus of education at Bemidji State University, where she contributed for more than 20 years guiding and supporting the development of future teachers. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Edward Waters College and a Master of Arts from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and is certified to teach at the secondary level in the state of Florida. Dr. Henry began her career in the late 1960s as a secondary school teacher with the Department of Public Education in Bunnell, Florida.
After two years with the Bunnell Department of Public Education, Dr. Henry accepted a position in the Virgin Islands, through which she taught secondary-level social studies to students on St. Thomas. She would remain active in the Virgin Islands for the next 15 years, rising to become the chairperson of her school's department of social studies, in addition to teaching a full course load. In 1983, Dr. Henry returned to Florida to begin doctoral coursework at Florida State University. She was awarded with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988, and became an associate professor of education at Bemidji State University during the same year.
Dr. Henry was awarded professor emeritus status in 2008, retiring from a fruitful career focused on outreach, continuing education and recruitment efforts aimed at Black and African American students. She is the author of two books, "The Girl From Jacksonville Who Dared to Dream, Hope, and Believe!" and "Feeling Like a Stranger in Your Hometown? Ask the Girl From Jacksonville!", the proceeds from which benefit a scholarship fund at Bemidji State University. Her continued support for the school extends to her financial contributions toward the maintenance and renovation of football facilities, and she is the namesake of the Dr. Annie B. Henry Football Locker Room complex. In recognition of her commitment to advocacy and activism on behalf of the educational profession, Dr. Henry has been presented with accolades from the American Red Cross, Bryn Mawr College, and Skipping Stones Awards, and she has been included in several prior volumes of Who's Who in American Women and Who's Who in American Education.
