Dr. Tang is a successful medical doctor who specializes in immunology. He has taught as an Associate Professor in Physiology and Immunology in the Department of Veterinary Biological Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine of Long Island University since 2019. His expertise as an educator included faculty appointments at Loma Linda University as an Assistant and Associate Research Professor in the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine, and at the University of Texas as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. During the earliest stages of his career, Dr. Tang also lectured and worked as a scientist at Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, between 1993 and 1997.

An exemplary teacher, Dr. Tang taught both undergraduate and graduate level students, as well as medical students. Known for his enthusiasm in the classroom, he has strived to convey concepts that students can relate to and are inspired by. In addition to teaching, Dr. Tang has devoted much of his time to directing and developing curriculum for numerous courses.

Prior to his scholarly commitments, Dr. Tang spent four years as a Research Associate at Harvard Medical School's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston from 2006 to 2010. This position followed the completion of a four year postdoctoral fellowship at the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies in San Diego between 2002 and 2006. Dr. Tang notably practiced medicine as a radiologist at Huangshan City People's Hospital from 1988 until 1990 before making his way to the U.S.

Dr. Tang has conducted extensive research throughout his career with the expectation of developing novel therapies for diseases that are both safe and efficient. Among his work, he was involved in defining the role of active vitamin D and A in immune regulation and tissue regeneration, the potential pathogenic role of newly discovered soluble survival factors from accessory cells in autoimmune diseases and the discovery and cloning of a new subset of regulatory CD8 T cells bearing CD8alpha-alpha homodimer. He was also instrumental in cloning technology for studying Qa-1 restricted CD8 T cells. As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Tang has acquired several patents, and has contributed approximately 45 scholarly articles in various peer reviewed publications in his field.

Studying in his native China, Dr. Tang received a Doctor of Medicine at Wanna Medical College in 1988 and a Master of Science in immunology at the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University in 1993. He subsequently became certified in methods in cell and molecular biology through the Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology and in immunology through the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996. Additionally, Dr. Tang studied at the University of Arizona, where he completed a predoctoral fellowship in 1998, a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology and immunology in 2001 and a second fellowship in 2010.

To remain aware of developments within the field, Dr. Tang has maintained his affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, and the American Association of Immunologists. Other memberships to Dr. Tang's credit include Guidepoint and Reuters Insight Community of Experts.

While attending college, Dr. Tang was recognized as an Outstanding Student by the Shanghai Bureau of Education in 1991. Fudan University also recognized him as an Outstanding Student in 1992 and granted him with a Guang Hua Scholarship that same year. For his work in the field, Dr. Tang was honored with several awards and recognitions, including a National Research Service Award, Travel Grant Award, Laboratory Grant Award, and Trainee Abstract Award from the American Association of Immunologists. He also secured funding for his research through grants from the National Institute of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. More recently, Dr. Tang was named a Distinguished Professor by the Jinan Infectious Disease Hospital of Shandong University in 2017.
