Alfred Van Hoek, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Physics

Dr. Van Hoek channels decades of expertise into his work at the University of Utah's School of Medicine

THORNTON, NH, February 09, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alfred Van Hoek, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After receiving a book on the subject of general relativity from his father, Dr. Van Hoek developed an interest in mathematics and physics. He found the book completely captivating and read about how changes in gravity are dependent on the flow of time. Since then, he has drawn inspiration from the illusory nature of reality and how individual perception affects how people view the world. During the mid-1970s, he completed a Bachelor of Science in biology from the Free University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from which he also earned a Master of Science in biology and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry. Additionally, Dr. Van Hoek pursued and finished postgraduate studies in biochemistry and bioenergetics at the University of Amsterdam, a fellowship in physiology and cell physiology through Catholic University in the Netherlands, and a visiting fellowship through the Verkman Lab at the University of California San Francisco.

Upon graduating from Free University with his doctorate, Dr. Van Hoek began working as an instructor at the University of San Francisco. Throughout the course of his career, he gained valuable expertise in the field as a medical instructor with Partners HealthCare, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Presently, he channels that experience into his work as a research assistant professor in the Department of Nephrology at the University of Utah's School of Medicine. Alongside his work at the university, Dr. Van Hoek serves as a reviewer for several publications, including the American Journal of Physiology – Cell Physiology, the Biophysical Journal, the Journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Methods and the Journal of Cell Science.

Well regarded for his scholarly output, Dr. Van Hoek has contributed to more than 60 publications, including "Lack of an effect of collecting duct-specific deletion of adenylyl cyclase 3 on renal Na+ and water excretion or arterial pressure," "Molecular characterization of a broad selectivity neutral solute channel" and "Identification and molecular cloning of water transporting proteins." In a career suffused with highlights, he is most proud to have assisted in the discovery of water transport across plasma cell membranes, and his publishing of an article with Progress in Physics, through which he has laid a stake in radical physics. In the coming years, Dr. Van Hoek intends to continue excelling in the world of physics and collaborate with like-minded individuals.
