John A. Linfoot, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Linfoot, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Unfoot pursued his education at the University of North Dakota and obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemistry in 1953, a Bachelor of Science in Medicine in the Spring of 1955 and a Master of Science in Physiology and Pharmacology in the summer of 1955. He later completed with a Doctor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1957. He refined his skills through residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospital in 1957, 1958, and 1559 Fellowship in Endocrinology in 1960 and 61. Dr. Unfoot is board certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Nuclear Medicine.

A renowned Endocrinologist and Nuclear Medicine Specialist for over 60 years began his career as Clinical Director of the Donner Pavilion, a patient and laboratory suite in Cowell Hospital on the University of California Berkeley Campus. The Donner Laboratory founded by John Lawrence MD, brother of Nobel Laureate Ernest Lawrence. The Donner Laboratory is the biology and medicine section of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The program was designed to evaluate, treat and follow patients with pituitary tumors, diabetic retinopathy and breast cancer who received magnetically focused heavy particle pituitary irradiation generated at the 184-inch synchrocyclotron. This provided him an opportunity to develop and apply multiple radio immunoassays of pituitary and other endocrine hormones. He was also exposed to pioneering imaging and nuclear medicine diagnostics. He served initially as a research associate and subsequently a senior staff scientist. Politics at department of energy and LBL led to his retirement after 20 years. Next project was establishing a commercial specialty endocrine laboratory and patient consulting program at Alta Bates Endocrine Laboratories at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley. He was also responsible for establishing the endocrine consulting services at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, Providence and Merritt Hospitals in Oakland, CA. He served as lecturer at the physiology department, 2 year medical school at Berkeley. He established a residency training program in Endocrinology for Highland Hospital residents. In 1976 he was installed as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California at Davis and trained residents at the Martinez Veterans Hospital until its closure. Also consulted on behalf of the Children's Hospital of East Bay since 1970.

In his professional work Dr. Unfoot published 170 peer reviewed articles and abstracts. He was also appointed as a reviewer for the 1993 edition of "Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment", which was published through the American Medical Association and a co-author to several other medical books, including "Conn's Current Therapy" and "Conn's Current Diagnosis." A highlight for him was the organization of an International Meeting on the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary tumors for the Post Graduate Department of the University of California Berkeley. He was the publishing editor and contributor of 6 articles in the book "Diagnosis and Treatment of Pituitary Tumors."

He was honored among the Outstanding Young Men of America and accepted an Honorary Alumni Award from the University of North Dakota, the Sioux Award. Locally, Dr. Unfoot has contributed as a member of the advisory board of the Easter Seals Society in Contra Costa County, California, a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Camp ADANCA Diabetic Youth Camp, a treasurer and cubmaster of the Boys Scouts of America and an ordained elder and deacon of the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church. As a respected voice in the medical field, Dr. Unfoot has been active as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and past President of the Alameda-Contra Costa Diabetes Association. Furthermore, he was affiliated with the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists. Recognized as a Top Doctor since 1916 in Lafayette, CA.

Renowned Endocrinologist and Nuclear Medicine Specialist for over 60 years, Dr. Unfoot found success as the Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Institute since 1985. He also maintains his own private practice, which has since relocated to Lafayette, California. He treats patients affected from thyroid disorders, diabetes, hyper/hypothyroidism and hypopituitarism.

Community service activities have been a major support by his wife of 65 years, Donna, who is a Pediatric Nurse, and his sons, Peter, an Endocrinologist at Walla Walla Clinic in Washington, John, a Critical Care Physician at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas and daughter Nancy Linfoot Hubert a MA in his current office. Great pleasures in his professional life have been participating in the Shrine. He is a member of the Aahmes Alchemist Clowns in Livermore, CA and Charter Member of the East Bay Clown Club. This clown club was formed by Charlie Finley, who was the Owner of the Oakland Athletics, to entertain fans at the baseball games in 1969-1971.
