She previously excelled as Aperture Credentialing's Vice Chair of the first statewide Medicaid credentialing pilot in the US for Georgia. Dr. Avery has consulted with numerous companies such as Hitachi and served as an expert in Telemedicine for several states and privately held companies both foreign and domestic. She was the first physician in US history to perform high level appeals for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It was then she invented the criteria hierarchy tool used to teach countless individuals who perform utilization management. During her journey, Dr. Avery received security clearances from CMS, FBI and DOD as well as being considered an expert in the field of forensic Addiction Medicine for her regional US Attorney General's office. Recently, Dr. Avery ascended to DPC-3 with USMEPCOM MEPS Louisville, KY, ranked #1 in the US for applicants, cadets and reenlisted to the six branches of the US military. In addition, Melissa has been an active co-owner of Avery Lumber Company, a turn century family timber and farming business.

Dr. Avery has received several certifications as a Certified Physician Executive through the Certifying Commission in Medical Management in 2009, Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine from the College of Hyperbaric Medicine in 2019 and from the American Heart Association in Neonatal, Pediatric and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Prior to embarking on her impressive career, she pursued a formal education at Rhodes College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry tract in 1992. She graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the College of Medicine Health Sciences Center at The University of Tennessee in 1996 both in Memphis and the Master of Medical Management in Health Systems Management from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2008. She is recertified by the American Board of Family Medicine, fellowed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and is a Fellow, Diplomate, Ambassador and Mentor for the American Association of Physician Leadership (AAPL).

Notably, Dr. Avery completed residency in Family Medicine at Greenville Hospital System in 1999. With a plethora of knowledge to her credit, she invented and launched nationally the NDC Carrier Import with NDC Health in 2000 after starting Avery Medical Center, PA. She presided on numerous committees and boards while teaching in her spare time. In 2009, she was runner up for a US Patent for the AVE-EX, an advanced shoulder orthotic. While helping to manage the deadly 2016 Indiana coinfection H1N1 coronavirus/MRSA pneumonitis pandemic with the CDC, she wrote and presented "Outbreak! Are You Ready?" to the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) in Las Vegas, NV. Later in 2019, she lectured on "Infective Endocarditis" at a NCCHC in Nashville, TN. Additionally, Dr. Avery authored "Are You Ready to Become a Physician Executive?" for MD Update Louisville, KY in 2013 and lectured collaboratively at Rhodes to undergraduates interested in entering the field of Medicine in 2012.

In order to remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Avery has long standing affiliations with a number of relevant organizations, including the AMA, AAFP, AAPL, and is an honorary member of the country's oldest medical society asked to be the medico-legal liaison having reviewed over 5,000 dirty credentialing files in her administrative career. She is a founding member of the advancement board for the Institute for Global Road Safety and Security of Clemson University who created the first Masters in Transportation Safety Administration degree program in the US. Additionally, she contributes regularly to the Salvation Army. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Avery was recognized as Kentucky Commonwealth Ambassador by the Kentucky Secretary of State in 2016.
