Barnard with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Following a long and successful career in higher education, Dr. Barnard retired in 2011 from the University of Albany in Albany, New York. Over the course of 43 years, she specialized in Latin, Greek and classical civilization on campus. She also briefly taught at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, as an assistant professor of classics and Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, as an instructor of classics before joining the Albany faculty. Additionally, Dr. Barnard served as a visiting lecturer at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada, in the summer of 1966 and at Concordia University in Montreal in the summer of 1975.
As an extension of her career, Dr. Barnard devoted much of her free time to conducting research. As a result, she disseminated her findings by authoring numerous articles in various scholarly journals. Dr. Barnard also wrote a book of poetry, "Trees," which was published in 2012 through Troy Book Makers and published a book of poetry, "The Timeless Forest" in the McGill Poetry Series in 1959.
While Dr. Barnard was immersed in her work, she was often involved in the peace movement, beginning in England during the nuclear disarmament movement while pursuing her master's degree. She later became active with several peace organizations in Albany, including the United Nations Association. Presently, Dr. Barnard remains active with Amnesty International, a nonprofit organization headquartered in the United Kingdom that focuses on human rights. She attends monthly meetings and is responsible for writing the organization's letters.
Coming of age, she drew inspiration from her mother, who majored in Latin language studies while attending college. Dr. Barnard began the study of Latin and Greek at Northfield School for Girls, a high school, now subsumed into Northfield Mount Hermon, from which she graduated in 1955. She then held the Peterson Memorial Scholarship in Classics at McGill University in Montreal from which she received her first BA in 1959. Dr. Barnard earned a Bachelor of Arts at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England, in 1962, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in classics at Yale University in the U.S. in 1966. Dr. Barnard was honored with a Research Award from the American Philosophical Society in 1979.
Fortunate to be aligned with multiple professional organizations in support of her teaching career, Dr. Barnard is a past vice president of her local chapter of the Archaeology Institute of America. Likewise, she is a former board member and past president of the local chapter of the UN Association. Dr. Barnard is also a member of the English Speaking Union Board. She has directed independent study in Latin and Greek at the Doane Street School, an independent school in Rensselaer, NY, two days a week since 2011.
In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Barnard was most proud to serve as a Fulbright scholar in the Republic of Cyprus in 2003. Marking this occasion as a considerable honor and one of her most notable achievements, she was notably 65 years old at the time.
