In a career filled with highlights, she is most proud of translating the writings of several filmmakers and artists including Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Nicolas de Staël, and Jia Zhangke.

In pursuit of her career, Dr. Shafto earned a Bachelor of Arts in classics and classical languages, and art history from Skidmore College in 1978, a Master of Arts in art history and archaeology from Columbia University in 1985 and a Master of Arts in film studies from the University of Iowa in 1994. From there, she completed a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa in 2000, and successfully defended her dissertation "Ut picture cinema: The Strange Adventure of Jean-Luc Godard" before pursuing postdoctoral studies at Princeton University in 2000.

Dr. Shafto remains professionally aligned with a number of organizations, including The Society of Cinema and Media Studies. Backed by her considerable expertise, she has authored and edited a number of works, including "The Zanzibar Films and the Dandys of May 1968" and "The Image in Dispute: Art and Cinema in the Age of Photography."

In light of her professional achievements, Dr. Shafto has been recognized many times, earning a Certificate of Recognition as an Outstanding Woman in the Community through the University of Iowa in 1995 and receiving fellowships through Princeton University, the University of Iowa and the Chateaubriand Fellowship program. In the near future, Dr. Shafto aims to continue teaching and translating while remaining open to new opportunities within the field.
