Benjamin Nelson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Nelson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Mr. Nelson is a gifted attorney and consultant whose background has included such appointments as a politician and high caliber insurance executive. Presently a senior policy advisor in Washington, he also serves as counsel for Lamson Dugan & Murray LLP, a large law firm that focuses its practice on litigation and corporate affairs. In this role, Mr. Nelson specializes in corporate and insurance regulatory law.

As a politician, Mr. Nelson initially served as a state chairperson for Helen Boosalis' gubernatorial campaign. Ms. Boosalis served as the mayor of Lincoln between 1975 and 1983. He was later elected as the 37th governor of Nebraska, between 1991 and 1999 before being elected as a U.S. senator in 2001. Recognized as a conservative Democrat in the Senate, he served two terms until 2013.

In 2013, Mr. Nelson was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) which is the standard setting organization for the 50 state insurance commissioners, the District of Columbia and the United States Territories.

As a former governor and U.S. senator for the State of Nebraska, Mr. Nelson comes highly regarded. In 2019, he was appointed as the chief executive officer of Insurance Care Direct, which is one of the largest private health and life insurance agencies in the nation. Affiliated with the agency since 2017, he was previously active on its board of directors.

With respect to his extensive insurance background and career, Mr. Nelson first served as a supervisor and Director of Insurance for the State of Nebraska from 1975 to 1976. He simultaneously accepted the position of assistant general counsel for Central National Insurance Group of Omaha in 1972, shortly after graduating from law school. Over the next decade, he rose to become the executive vice president, president and chief executive officer. In 1982, Mr. Nelson accepted the role of executive vice president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which followed five years of counsel for Kennedy, Holland, DeLacy and Svoboda in Omaha between 1985 and 1990. Ultimately, he returned to the NAIC, when he was asked to serve as the chief executive officer from 2013 until 2017.

Throughout his career, Mr. Nelson has always believed in the importance of improvement. Whether it was regarding his work in insurance, at the law firm, or in politics, he has consistently strived to perform at the best of his ability. Apart from his paid positions, his civic background began in 1970, when he became a board trustee for the Wesley House Foundation in Omaha. He later co-chaired the Carter/Mondale Re-Election Campaign in Nebraska during 1980, co-founded and served as the chairperson of the Governor's Ethanol Coalition, and was the president of the Council of State Governors.

Mr. Nelson was born in McCook, Nebraska. Fueled by his passion for public service, during high school at 17 he was elected as the governor of Nebraska in a mock legislative program. He also became an Eagle Scout. After graduating, he was accepted to the University of Nebraska, where he attained a Bachelor of Art and a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1963 and 1966, respectively. Mr. Nelson subsequently began teaching in the department of philosophy on campus between 1963 and 1965 while pursuing a Doctor of Jurisprudence, which he completed in 1970. He has since been admitted to practice by the Nebraska Bar Association.

To support his career in law, Mr. Nelson became active with several industry-related organizations, such as the American Bar Association and the Nebraska Bar Association. He is also a former chairperson of the Midwestern Governors Association and is a former chairperson of the Western Governors Association. In 1993, Mr. Nelson was named as the Ambassador of Plenipotentiary and was the recipient of the Friends of Nebraska Broadcasters Award from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association. He also received a Distinguished Eagle Award from the National Eagle Scout Association in 1994. Apart from academic his awards, Mr. Nelson received honorary doctorates from Creighton University in 1992, Peru State College in 1993 and the University of Nebraska in 2013.
