Dr. Hundahl is recently retired after a distinguished career in surgical oncology, medical outreach and clinical education. Dedicating much of his career to the treatment and identification of gastric cancers and their clinical outcomes, he was also the co-founder of CareResource Hawaii, the largest nonprofit provider of home healthcare services in the state. He previously graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, in 1977, after which he enrolled at the Yale School of Medicine, where he would also earn, with honors, a Doctor of Medicine in 1981. For much of the 1980s, Dr. Hundahl pursued a surgical residency at the University of Hawaii before being granted a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

In 1987, Dr. Hundahl earned certification from the American Board of Surgery, building on an earlier credential from the National Board of Medical Examiners, and began a Honolulu-based private practice in surgical oncology in 1988. He was named as the associate chief of surgery at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu in 1993 and rose to become the chief of surgery between 1994 and 2000. From 1998 until 2000, Dr. Hundahl additionally served as the chair of the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. In 2002, he closed his private practice to become a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California Davis and the chief of surgery of the Department of Veterans Affairs of Northern California, where he would practice until his retirement in 2019.

Dr. Hundahl established Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii, currently operating as CareResource Hawaii, in 1986, and continues to serve as the director alongside his clinical obligations. Throughout the course of his career, he has provided his expertise as the medical director of the Queen's Cancer Institute from 2000 until 2002, served as a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons between 1998 and 2000, was the chair of the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. Moreover, Dr. Hundahl excelled as an associate faculty member at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Cancer Research Center in Honolulu.

Dr. Hundahl has held numerous regional leadership positions in the American Cancer Society, including service as the vice president of the Hawaii-Pacific Division and membership with the Clinical Trials Working Group. He is the former medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management, has contributed more than 60 scientific journal articles and served as a reviewer for dozens of others, and is well-known for his breakthrough research in computer-guided therapies for gastric cancers. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Hundahl has been the recipient of dozens of prestigious awards for his clinical and research excellence, including 25 consecutive years of inclusion as one of the Best Doctors in America, the 2009 US Davis School of Medicine Joan Oettinger Memorial Award and recognition as an Honorary Commander of the 60th Medical Group at Travis Air Force Base.
