At a young age, Dr. Romero decided to pursue a career in medicine. In medical school, he fell in love with the discipline of pharmacology, believing it to be a vector through which problems could be solved. Dr. Romero obtained his medical degree from the Pontifical Xavierian University, trained in clinical pharmacology at the Colombian National University, and completed a Master's of Science degree in epidemiology at the Colombian Academy of Medicine.
After working in the pharmaceutical industry and in academia, Dr. Romero was recruited to the Critical Path Institute (C-Path), where he currently serves as the Chief Science Officer and Executive Director of Clinical Pharmacology. During his tenure with C-Path, Dr. Romero established the organization's Quantitative Medicine Program, contributing to the transformation of drug development paradigms in conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, tuberculosis, polycystic kidney disease, type 1 diabetes, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, through the generation of quantitative solutions that integrate mathematical descriptions of disease progression, patient dropouts, placebo and drug effects.
Serving as the chairman of the board of AZCERT (CredibleMeds, Inc.), he led the development of an evidence-based causality and risk stratification process, which then allowed the identification of drugs previously unknown to be associated with abnormal heart rhythms. He has further flourished in adjunct faculty positions at the University of Arizona, the Arizona State University and the University of Southern California, supporting research activities in medicine, clinical pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, modeling and simulation, and data science.
Fluent in four languages, Dr. Romero has developed an expertise in facilitating seamless communication between scientists, clinicians, regulators and patients around the world, to facilitate the integration of clinical medicine, pharmacology, epidemiology with statistics and mathematics, and accelerate the process of development of novel medical products. For his exemplary efforts throughout his career, he was presented with the Distinctive Contributions Award by the Coalition Against Major Diseases. During his training, Dr. Romero was recognized as the Best Academic in Training at the Colombian National University.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Romero has written numerous scientific articles on drug development, quantitative medicine and regulatory science. He is additionally active as a founding member of the International Society Pharmacometrics and a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has also been affiliated with the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology. Over the years, Dr. Romero has attributed his professional success to his passion and discipline, as he always loved learning new things and challenge paradigms in different fields.
