Harriett E. Smith Somerville, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Education

Dr. Somerville is a professor emeritus of biological sciences at the University of Alabama



    OWENS CROSS ROADS, AL, March 03, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Harriett E. Smith Somerville, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Somerville is a professor emeritus of biological sciences at the University of Alabama, where she spent more than three decades in leadership. Since childhood, she was fascinated with biological study and the scientific process, and she looked up to her grandfather and uncle who were both medical doctors. She completed coursework at Randolph-Macon Woman's College between 1962 and 1964 before earning a Bachelor of Science at the University of Alabama in 1966. In 1970, Dr. Somerville was awarded her Doctor of Philosophy in biological sciences at the University of Texas, beginning an almost 40-year career in science research and education.

After several years in research and lecturing roles at area institutions, Dr. Somerville accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Alabama. She directed the Biology Honors Program from 1977 to 1982. From 1982 through 2009, Dr. Somerville acted as the director of the University of Alabama Electron Microscope Laboratory/Optical Analysis Facility in addition to teaching biology coursework and supervising the school's Molecular Biology Facility for much of the late 1990s. Throughout much of her career with the University of Alabama, Dr. Somerville supervised and guided honors and graduate-level research students, and she spent nearly 30 years as a member of the editorial board of the University of Alabama Press.

In addition to her service to the University of Alabama Press, Dr. Somerville sat on the board of reviewers of the Transactions of the American Microscopical Society and held leadership positions with the Society of Protozoologists/ International Society of Protistologists and was elected to Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. She has been the recipient of numerous high-profile grants and awards for her work in cell biology and was honored as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Though Dr. Somerville retired from full-time teaching in 2009, she remains affiliated with the University of Alabama as an emeritus professor.
