Porter, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Porter celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having retired from his position as a renowned physicist, Dr. Porter is celebrated for his extensive career and expertise in plasma physics. Aligned with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, California, for more than four decades, he found great success in various research projects during his tenure. The LLNL, which was established in 1952, is a federal research facility that serves to advance nuclear weapons science and technology to address the national security needs of the country.

Apart from his full-time responsibilities at the lab, Dr. Porter maintained a lengthy commitment as a member of the diverter physics expert group for the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Garching, Germany, between 1993 and 2000. The ITER, which is the world's largest experimental machine designed to harness the energy of fusion, presently includes the collaboration of 35 different countries. Dr. Porter's research has resulted in the acquisition of several patents for guidance schemes for charged pellets in fusion. As a seasoned scientist, he has also disseminated much of his findings by contributing a number of articles to peer reviewed journals.

Throughout the course of Dr. Porter's illustrious career in the sciences, he has often attended international conferences in such countries as Russia, Japan and Germany. He also enjoyed giving back to his community. Passionate about education, Dr. Porter frequently volunteered his time by teaching science at the Junction Avenue K-8 School in Livermore and traveling to other schools throughout the region to lecture about physics.

Dr. Porter was born in Alliance, Nebraska. After completing high school and his undergraduate degree, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy at Pennsylvania State University in 1968. Supporting his subsequent career, Dr. Porter has been aligned as a prominent member of the American Physical Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the 72nd edition of Who's Who in America.
