Michael A. Rice, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Rice, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Rice celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Rice is a talented biologist and professor who has devoted his career to educating future generations. Teaching at the University of Rhode Island since 1987, he was named as a full professor of fisheries and aquaculture in 2000. Moreover, Dr. Rice chaired the fisheries, animal and veterinary science department between 2000 and 2004 and chaired the faculty senate for another two years, until 2007, and was recently re-elected to serve in the same position from 2021 to 2023.

Throughout the course of his scholarly career, Dr. Rice has maintained interest in the environmental physiology ecology of such bivalve mollusks as clams, oysters, mussels and scallops. He also extensively studied the effects of shell fishing on the population ecology of bivalves. Dr. Rice has been bestowed with several grants for his research from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other organizations. One of his more recent grants will support a project in Zambia that will continue over the next several years.

Dr. Rice's research has notably taken him throughout the world, including Indonesia, Philippines, West Africa and the Black Sea region. As a researcher, he has disseminated his findings by contributing many articles in scientific journals. Dr. Rice also spent five years as the associate editor of the Journal of Shellfish Research between 1993 and 1998, and serves as an associate editor of the Scientific Journal of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (Indonesia) since 2020.

Dr. Rice was active on the Conservation Commission of South Kingstown as its chairperson. He was also appointed as a member of the Legislative Commission on Aquaculture Development, to the Legislative Commission to Develop and Coordinate a Collaborative Effort to Formulate a Restoration Plan for the North Cape Barge Oil Spill, and was the legislative commissioner proxy delegate to meetings of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. In 2008, Dr. Rice was also elected to serve in the Rhode Island House of Representatives in District 35, where he served for two years, serving on the House Committees on Environment and Natural Resources, and Government Oversight.

Apart from his work in politics, Dr. Rice has been engaged with numerous other civic opportunities. He has also been active on the Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council since 2013. Likewise, he is a past president of the Tavern Hall Club and the University Club of the University of Rhode Island and has served on the board of directors and as the treasurer of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association, a genealogical and family history society. Additionally, Dr. Rice is a member of the Rhode Island Commodores and the Society of Colonial Wars.

Dr. Rice obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology at the University of San Francisco in 1977 and a Master of Science in marine biology at the University of California (UC) at Irvine in 1981. Briefly departing from his academic efforts, he completed pre-service training for the U.S. Corps at the University of Rhode Island before traveling to the Philippines to serve as a volunteer extensionist with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources from 1981 to 1985. Dr. Rice later returned to UC at Irvine, where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative physiology in 1987. Upon graduating, he quickly secured a position as a professor at the University of Rhode Island.

Enjoying the opportunity to serve with various industry-related organizations, Dr. Rice is affiliated as a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, the National Shellfisheries Association, the World Aquaculture Society and the Asian Fisheries Society. He is also a lifetime member of the American Society of Zoologists and the Oceanography Society, as well as a member of Sigma Xi, a nonprofit scientific research honor society for scientists and engineers. Dr. Rice received three Fulbright Scholarship awards between 1996 and 2006. He was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Department of Agriculture in 2018.
