Driven to become a stellar physician, Dr. Meza earned a Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1977 and 1980, respectively. He subsequently gained valuable expertise in the field with Henry Ford Medical Center and Hospital, serving as the physician-in-charge, the Vice Chairman for clinical affairs, the medical director, the Residency Program Director and the Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs over the course of nearly 25 years. While employed with Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Meza furthered his education with a Master of Science in health services administration from Central Michigan University.
In 2011, Dr. Meza began working as an associate professor in family medicine and public health service at Wayne State University's School of Medicine, with which he remains dedicated to his students to this day. Recently, he also obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in cultural anthropology through Wayne State University. Likewise, Dr. Meza accepted the role of editor-in-chief for Clinical Research in Practice: the Journal of Team Hippocrates in 2015.
Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Meza has been affiliated with several organizations, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the North American Primary Care Research Group, the American Anthropological Association and the American Balint Society. Throughout his career, he has also dedicated himself to those less fortunate through the Cabrini Clinic, the Boy Scouts of America and the Habitat for Humanity Global Initiative. In light of his professional knowledge, Dr. Meza has accrued a plethora of grants and contributed to such publications as "Diagnosis Narratives and the Healing Ritual in Western Medicine," "Clinical Decision Science emphasizes unique social context in a way that evidence-based medicine does not," "Treatments for Chronic Prostatitis" and "Reviewing the Ethics of Gatekeeping in Managed Healthcare."
For his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Meza was presented with the Ronald Krol Doctor of Education Award for Research Mentorship, the Oakwood Family Medicine Faculty of the Year Award, a Top Family Practitioner Award from America's Best Doctors and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, to name a few. Though his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of practicing medicine for more than 35 years. In the coming years, Dr. Meza intends to continue channeling his expertise into his editorial and educational roles as to make as big of an impact on the field of medicine as he can. He believes the social dimensions of practicing medicine are poorly understood by most doctors and healthcare administrators and his special skills in those areas provide the greatest opportunity to make a difference in wellbeing for Americans.
