Ms. Gaetano enjoys retirement after more than 25 years of groundbreaking work in chemical engineering. A talented and motivated student, she excelled in many subjects, but was immediately fascinated by chemical engineering after learning about the discipline from a college recruiter. Ms. Gaetano earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with honors, and continued her education throughout her career with more than 25 credits in business management, leadership and topics in engineering.
After apprenticeships with the United States Army Corps of Engineers and Westinghouse Corporation, Ms. Gaetano became the first woman chemical engineer hired by Bayer AG, when she accepted a role as a technical product representative for the subsidiary Mobay Corporation in 1978. By 1981, she had risen to become a product manager, with promotions to technical marketing specialist and specialty transportation polymers supervisor following shortly after. Specializing in foams, elastomers and structural plastics for the transportation, electronics, furnishings and consumer products industries, Ms. Gaetano's research was crucial in the market development of cutting-edge materials solutions throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1993, Ms. Gaetano was named as the manager of new markets development for Bayer Corporation, and spent the next ten years as a marketing and business manager for their froth sheet foam and elastomer textile backings departments. By her retirement in 2003, she was Bayer Corporation's industry manager of raw materials, through which she combined her extensive background in engineering with award-winning marketing and management skills in a principal capacity. A trailblazer for women in engineering, Ms. Gaetano was the first female committee chairperson of the Society of Plastics Industry, and has contributed numerous articles, abstracts and white papers to such journals as Modern Plastics, Plastics World and Chemical Week.
Ms. Gaetano attributes her success to her drive, determination and commitment to succeed in an industry that has been under represented by women, and she is proud to have helped pave the way for others to succeed in her field. In her retirement, she cares for her mother and remains active in progressive political causes and community youth mentoring programs. Ms. Gaetano is currently exploring a career as a writer, and hopes to publish an account of her experience and rise through the engineering industry.
