Junko Kondo Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Ms. Kondo celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Highly accomplished in her respected field, Ms. Kondo enjoyed over a decade in the health care field before transforming into academia. As completing her service as dean of School of Health Science in Sapporo Medical University in 1997 she was named to professor emeritus, and was invited to the then Tenshi Junior College in Sapporo, Japan, where she continues to serve significantly in both college administration and teaching in the Graduate School of Midwifery.

Immediately after graduating from Tenshi Junior College of Health and Welfare she was employed at Tenshi Hospital in Sapporo, Japan in 1953 and four years later she made her way forward to be affiliated with Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Brighton, MA, the United States of America on an exchange program between 1957 and 1958 while pursuing higher professional attainment. She completed a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree at Boston College in the United States in 1960 and 1962 respectively.

Upon returning to Japan, she served at Tenshi Hospital, this time as the director of the newly opened Public Health Nursing Department between 1962 and 1965, which was followed by shifting herself to the field of developing health professionals i.e. education.
Ms. Kondo first served as an assistant professor in Tenshi Junior College for three years in the advanced integrated course of Public Health Nursing and Midwifery from its opening in 1965, then after completing the three years' postgraduate coursework at Tokyo University in 1972, she became a professor at Saint Luke's College of Nursing (present St. Luke's International University) in Tokyo.

During her over 20 year tenure until1993, she prepared St. Luke's College of Nursing to open the Graduate School, first with the master's course in 1980 and later Japan's first-ever doctoral course in 1988. She was then recruited by Sapporo Medical University as dean and professor in the School of Health Science to serve until 1997. Ultimately returning to Tenshi Women's Junior College in 1997, which later became known as Tenshi College, Ms. Kondo remained on campus for the duration of her career. During her tenure, she moved in and out of roles from professor and director of nursing to president and dean. Tenshi College is notably a private college that was founded as Sapporo Tenshi Women's Vocational School of Health and Welfare in 1947. It was renamed Tenshi Junior College of Health and Welfare in 1950 and Tenshi Women's Junior College in 1953 before becoming collegiate and coeducational by the reorganization in 2000.

To remain abreast of changes in her field, Ms. Kondo has excelled, as the President of the Japan Society of Private Nursing Colleges and Universities from 2008 to 2015 and an honorary president since 2016, an auditor of the Japan Institute of Midwifery Evaluation from 2011 to 2020, and an honorary member of Japan Academy of Nursing Education. She's also an honorary member and twice served as the president of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science, a past president of the Japan Academy of Midwifery and a past president and an honorary member of the Japanese Midwives Association.

Furthermore, Ms. Kondo enjoyed nine years as an Asian Pacific Regional Representative for the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) between1999 and 2008. As an organization representing midwifery association in over 120 countries, the ICM works with several other organizations to promote their mission, including World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) by providing care for mothers and their newborn children. As an extension of her work, Ms. Kondo was also active on the editorial board of the International Journal of Nursing Studies from 1989 to 2004 and the editorial advisory board of Journal of the International Confederation of Midwives in 1990.

In 1971, Ms. Kondo received a fellowship from the International Council of Nurses. Among her awards, she was honored with a second degree Medal from the president of Egypt in 1983 for her endeavors as a nursing and midwifery education consultant in the official development assistance programs through collaboration of Ministry of Health and Population, Cairo University Faculty of Nursing and Cairo University Pediatric Hospital of Egypt and Japan International Cooperation Agency, and in 2019 with the Princess Sringarindra Award from the Kingdom of Thailand, which is awarded to individuals who internationally and prominently contributed to the advancement of nursing and midwifery. In Japan, she was also awarded with the Distinguished Service Medal from the Japan Academy of midwifery in 2013 and the Light upon the Mountain Award (for health professionals with great achievements and on active duty above 80 of age) in 2016. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Kondo has been cited in the first and second editions of Who's Who in Asia. The third edition of who's who in medicine and health care, and several additions of the Who's Who in the world.
