BELMONT, MA, March 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Barry Putnam Simmons, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Simmons celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Simmons is a talented Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief Emeritus of the Hand/Upper Extremity service at Brigham and Women's Hospital in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery since 1974. He also maintains an appointment as an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, where he has been teaching since 1974. Additionally, Dr. Simmons is a staff member at Faulkner Hospital, Children's Hospital of Boston, Sidney Farber Cancer Institute and at New England Baptist Hospital. He was a volunteer at the Indian Health Service, a public agency of the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona, for ten years.

As a renowned Orthopedic Hand Surgery specialist, Dr. Simmons, in addition to caring for all the traumatic and nontraumatic disorders of the upper extremity, has had a unique sub-specialty caring for patients afflicted with inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis. In addition to his career at Brigham and Women's, he also attended patients at Harvard University Health Services for 45 years. Furthermore, Dr. Simmons was a consultant to the Department of Athletics at Harvard University where he cared for many athletes that competed in multiple sports.

Dr. Simmons established the Combined Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at Brigham and Women's and Children's Hospital in 1981 that is now internationally recognized. Including an affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital since 1990, the combined staff now has 15 attending surgeons across these facilities and has trained approximately 100 fellows over 40 years. Because of the unique inclusion of Children's Hospital, the fellowship has helped create the sub-specialty of Pediatric Upper Extremity care, which is now an integral part of academic Orthopedic Departments across the country. Many members of these departments have been trained in this fellowship. In addition, the fellowship has played a significant role in minority education.

Dr. Simmons has held numerous visiting professorships, excelled as a visiting lecturer and served as a guest speaker for many years. As a board member, committee member and chair, he has played a significant role in the major organizations affiliated with these professional societies, i.e., American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopedic Association. These include past president and former board director of the Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute.

Dr. Simmons has contributed to knowledge and education with his research related to his field of expertise. Articles and chapters in books and multiple, respected peer-reviewed journals range from treatment of disorders in the pediatric age group to analysis and treatment of common and more unusual afflictions in adults. Dr. Simmons has played an instrumental role in pioneering outcome research as it effects musculoskeletal disorders. He was one of the co-authors of the index article on outcomes of treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that causes numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand. Dr. Simmons also served in various editorial positions for scholarly journals and has remained active as a consultant reviewer for the Journal of the Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Hand Surgery.

Drawing inspiration from the example of his father, who was a doctor, Dr. Simmons developed a passion for biology and science. Following high school, he was accepted to the prestigious Harvard University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1961 in Biochemical Science. After college, he matriculated at Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, earning his MD degree in 1965. Thereafter, Dr. Simmons completed a hand surgery fellowship with Dr. Raoul Tubiana in Paris and a fellowship in trauma at the Swiss Association for Internal Fixation in Basil, Switzerland. He holds a medical license in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is board certified in orthopedic surgery and holds a certificate of added qualification in surgery of the hand.

After the year of general surgery at the University of San Francisco in 1967, Dr. Simmons was commissioned in the US Navy as a Lieutenant. In two years of active duty, he was the medical officer on board the USS Duluth that was deployed to Vietnam and then a year stateside at Treasure Island in San Francisco. He subsequently served an additional four years in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Dr. Simmons has received numerous awards throughout his incredible career, including a Physician Achievement Award for excellence in arthritis care and leadership in the fight against arthritis from the Arthritis Foundation in 2008. He was also named to the Top Doctors in Boston for 2006.
