A prominent physician for more than 50 years, Dr. Downham specializes in dermatology and dermatopathology. During this time, he has excelled in various positions throughout Michigan during his tenure in medicine, including in private practice, as a staff member at Harper Hospital in Detroit and as a senior staff member at Henry Ford Medical Group in Taylor, with which he has been practicing since 1978. He also continues to consult on behalf of Southshore Medical Center in Trenton. Additionally, Dr. Downham began teaching early in his professional career, having been hired as an instructor in the department of dermatology at Wayne State University in the School of Medicine in 1974 before operating as a clinical professor and mentor to the many incredible medical students on campus.

Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Downham has authored and co-authored dozens of scholarly articles in such prominent publications as the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, the International Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. He also wrote for the department of dermatology website at www.henryfordderm.org, the Michigan Dermatological Society's site at www.midermsoc.org, and, among other locations and publications, the department of dermatology intranet at www.hfhderm.org. Dr. Downham has also presented frequently before various professional organizations in his area of expertise.

Dr. Downham's interest in medicine was nurtured by his father's suffering from psoriasis as well as by his daughter's diagnosis with Addison's disease. Intrigued by how the body works as a unified system, he decided to focus on dermatology. He pursued an education at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor's degree in 1966 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. Dr. Downham subsequently completed an internship in the department of internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, followed by a dermatologic residency at Wayne State University in the School of Medicine.

After completing his internship, Dr. Downham enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a captain in the Medical Corps at the 323rd General Hospital in Inkster, Michigan between 1971 and 1978. He was also active as a resident clinical associate of dermatology research at the VA Hospital in Allen Park, Michigan, between 1973 and 1974. Furthermore, Dr. Downham is board-certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and obtained a medical license in the state of Michigan.

A member of numerous national and international industry-related organizations that have been instrumental in supporting and advancing his career, Dr. Downham has been appointed as a member of the internet committee and a past president of the Michigan Dermatological Society. Moreover, he worked as the chairman of the communications committee of the Wayne County Medical Society. Dr. Downham was additionally affiliated with the National Medical Legal Information, Inc., the American Society of Dermatopathology, the American Venereal Disease Association, the International Society of Tropical Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology.

Likewise, Dr. Downham accrued several research grants from the Dermatology Foundation and Wayne State University. Attributing much of his professional success to the love and ongoing support of his lovely wife Juliana Downham over the years, he was also honored with several teaching and medical awards, including an Outstanding Professor Award in 1998 and a Certificate of Recognition for Voluntary Teaching in 2014 from Wayne State University, as well as a CME Award from the American Academy of Dermatology between 1989 and 1992. In addition to these accolades, he has been included in several medical publications such as the Global Directory of Who's Who as a Top Doctor for 2016. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Downham has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
