Kaitlin A. Pruskowski, PharmD, Celebrated for Dedication to Critical Pharmacy Care and Research

Dr. Pruskowski oversees clinical pharmacy functions in the burn unit of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research



    SCHERTZ, TX, March 26, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kaitlin A. Pruskowski, PharmD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Supported by a lifelong desire to become a healthcare professional and an innate love for mathematics and science, Dr. Pruskowski geared her studies toward the pharmaceutical industry. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical and healthcare studies, cum laude, from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She completed a 6-year Doctor of Pharmacy program between 2008 and 2014; she interned at a CVS pharmacy while in her PharmD program and worked at CVS from 2008 to 2013.

Upon graduating with her doctoral degree in 2014, Dr. Pruskowski completed 2 years of post-graduate training first at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as a PGY1 pharmacy practice resident, then at the University of Maryland Medical Center as a PGY2 critical care pharmacy resident. Between 2015 and 2016, Dr. Pruskowski provided clinical services to the medical, trauma, surgical, and cardiac surgical intensive care units, precepted student pharmacists and residents and offered clinical and operational support to staff pharmacists.

Drawing on her considerable expertise, Dr. Pruskowski excels today with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. As a clinical pharmacist in burn critical care, she maintains responsibility for the inpatient clinical pharmacy functions of the burn center, provides therapeutic consultations to evaluate, recommend or modify medication therapy in patients with complex medical problems, assists in developing the burn center's clinical practice guidelines, protocols and policies, and leads research and process-improvement projects to improve patient care. In addition to her clinical work, she remains involved in a variety of research projects, including "Trough-based versus AUC:MIC-based vancomycin dosing", "Continuous ketamine infusions for ICU sedation", and "Short versus long duration of antimicrobial therapy after source control for necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections," through which she served as primary investigator.

Alongside other industry scholars, Dr. Pruskowski has contributed to a plethora of presentations and abstracts to such publications as the International Journal of Burns and Trauma and the Journal of Burn Care & Research. Likewise, she presented on the subject of hydroxocobalamin at the Military City USA Trauma Collaborative Research Conference in 2020.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Pruskowski has remained dedicated to continuing education, becoming board-certified in pharmacotherapy and critical care pharmacy, and earning basic life support and advanced life support certifications through the American Red Cross, an APhA pharmacy-based immunization delivery certification, and Psych 911 Psychological First Aid training. Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Society for Critical Care Medicine. In conjunction with her work, she also helped establish a therapy dog program at the U.S. Army Burn Center. In recognition of her professional excellence, she earned the Commander's Time Off Award through the U.S. Army Burn Center in 2019 and was recognized in the Top 5 Abstracts through the American Burn Association in 2020. Within the next five years, Dr. Pruskowski intends to remain in the same role, continue clinical research, and mentor future pharmacy students.
