Driven to pursue a career in helping others, Dr. Li earned a Bachelor of Medicine from Shanghai Medical University in 1989 before immigrating to the United States to further his education. From there, he received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1990, a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1996, and completed postdoctoral studies at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1999. Upon finishing his fellowship, he joined Tularik as a scientist. Though early in his professional career, he managed to solidify a $40 million collaboration agreement with Amgen in 2004.
Backed by his professional expertise and extensive educational resume, Dr. Li began working at Merck Research Laboratories in 2004. Over the course of nearly 15 years, he held a number of roles, including Research Fellow of target validation, Senior Research Fellow specializing in atherosclerosis, Director of Biology Discovery, genomics and phenotypic screening, and Director of Pharmacology, screening and triage confirmation. Just prior to obtaining his current role, he gained valuable expertise as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Eternity Bioscience, Inc., the New Jersey Research and Development Center affiliated with Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine. As CSO, he led a group of more than 30 biologists and chemists in delivering innovative, cutting-edge drug candidates for unmet medical needs.
Drawing upon more than 20 years of knowledge in drug discovery, oncology, immunology and more, Dr. Li excels today as Executive Director of PTC Therapeutics, a role he obtained in 2020. With the goal of advancing novel small molecule RNA splicing modulators for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer, he identifies specific molecules to ensure they change the course of various diseases, which in turn benefits the patient population. To remain abreast of changes in an ever-evolving field, he aligns himself with the American Society of Diabetes, American Society of Immunology, and the American Society for Cancer Research.
A seasoned professional, he received the Young Investigator Award through the American Society for Cancer Research in 1999. His career has been filled with highlights, and he is especially proud of his postdoctoral fellowship training at Columbia University, during which time he discovered a novel tumor suppressor gene, PTEN. During his career, Dr. Li co-authored over fifty scientific and patent publications, including in the journals of Science and Nature Genetics. Looking ahead, Dr. Li intends to continue to lead novel programs that guide drugs from the discovery phase onward.
Married with two children, Dr. Li enjoys travel, learning different cultures, trying different food, and volunteering time in community service. As the first generation immigrant, Dr. Li continues to embrace and to enrich American values, institutions and beliefs.
