A pioneer in neonatology, Dr. Ramanathan's extensive background in academia spans nearly 40 years. Recruited by the Los Angeles County and University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center, he is presently a professor of pediatrics in the division of neonatology and the director of the neonatal intensive care unit in the Keck School of Medicine. Directing one of the largest fellowship programs in the country in neonatal-perinatal medicine, he is currently overseeing 18 fellows. Dr. Ramanathan formerly taught as an assistant professor of pediatrics in the school medicine at the Olive View Medical Center, University of California, during 1988 and was a clinical instructor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California between 1984 and 1986.

Some of Dr. Ramanathan's major research has focused on surfactant therapy, the role of inflammatory cytokines in acute, chronic lung injury and non-invasive ventilation. He has also conducted studies on the molecular basis of lung injury and oxygen radical mediated disorders in newborn infants and was responsible for the establishment of noninvasive ventilation as a primary mode of respiratory support around the world. One of Dr. Ramanathan's most personally rewarding achievements, however, was caring for one of the smallest babies ever born at just nine ounces and the third smallest baby to be delivered at LAC+USC Medical Center in 2011.

Dr. Ramanathan was recognized with a Hero of the Medical Center Award in 2012 for the expert care he gave the infant girl, who is now healthy and happy. Throughout the course of his career, he has secured numerous grants from the National Institute of Health and other organizations to fund his research. Dr. Ramanathan also holds a patent for the RAM nasal cannula, which he developed in 2010 and has been used in many countries to support newborn infants needing respiratory support. He also holds another patent on a low cost ventilator for use around the globe.

A prolific writer, Dr. Ramanathan has contributed more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and over 300 abstracts and has contributed more than 15 book chapters, including the fifth edition of "Roger's Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care" in 2016. He also became an advisory board member for the Journal of Neonatology in India in 2018, and continues to serve on the editorial board for several scholarly journals. Dr. Ramanathan has presented approximately 325 times as an invited speaker at conferences locally, nationally and internationally and has hosted more than 355 international lecturers, workshops and courses on neonatal care since 2000.

Dr. Ramanathan graduated from Guruvappa High School in his native India. He later earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Stanley Medical College, Madras University, in 1975, and a Doctor of Medicine in Pediatrics at the Institute for Child Health and Hospital for Children in Madras. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a residency in Pediatrics at Lincoln Medical Center, New York Medical College, a fellowship in neonatology at LAC+USC Medical Center, and a research fellowship in neonatology at Harbor-University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Ramanathan also holds several certifications, including in neonatal resuscitation as an instructor, STABLE Course Instructor, basic life support and pediatric advanced life support.

Affiliated with several prominent professional organizations related to his work, Dr. Ramanathan is a member of the Western Society for Pediatric Research, American Federation for Medical Research, the California Association of Neonatologists, and the European Society for Pediatric Research. He is also an honorary member of several organizations and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Thoracic Society, where he has been active in various sections and on numerous committees. Recognized multiple times for his medical and teaching career, Dr. Ramanathan was recently named as the Top Pediatrician in Los Angeles by the International Association of Pediatricians in 2018, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Neonatology Forum of India in 2017 and was presented with an Honor Award from the Brazilian Congress of Intensive Care Medicine in Brazil for his contributions to intensive care in South America in 2015. He has also consistently been named to multiple medical publications, including America's Top Doctors, US News & World Report, and Castle Connolly for his expertise.
