Dr. Rogers celebrates 20 years in engineering and education

COLUMBIA, MO, April 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Reginald E. Rogers Jr. has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

From a young age, Dr. Rogers harbored a curiosity for how things worked and would often deconstruct household items in order to put them back together. He was also able to engage very well with others and discovered that he had a natural ability for teaching. Dr. Rogers eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Rogers began his career as a research and development engineer at Procter & Gamble before transitioning back to graduate school. Between his M.S. and Ph.D., he took up an opportunity at DuPont as a summer intern. He later transitioned into academia, initially serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for two years before becoming an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. After attaining the rank of Associate Professor at RIT, Dr. Rogers transitioned to the University of Missouri and has excelled as an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, while serving in courtesy appointments in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

As an accomplished educator, Dr. Rogers has been grateful to have changed a number of lives through teaching. Many of his former students have been in touch with him well following graduation, and he always finds joy in their successes. As the only African American professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri, Dr. Rogers believes that he can become an example for many people who come after him in the field.

As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Rogers often contributes to articles published in professional journals. He has authored several educational articles in PRISM magazine from the American Society for Engineering Education, Chemical Engineering Education, and the Journal of Chemical Education. Dr. Rogers has been affiliated with the American Society of Engineering Education, the National Society of Black Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Materials Research Society and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers.

Over the years, Dr. Rogers has attributed his professional success to his appreciation for life. In 1999, he was hospitalized after a serious accident and was told that it would take two years for him to learn how to walk again. Through determination, persistence, and his faith, he was able to overcome the significant adversities to get back on his feet within weeks of the accident. In the years since, Dr. Rogers has used his triumph over adversity to help guide others. With giving of his time and service in the community, mentorship of individuals, and the development of meaningful lifelong relationships with his students, Dr. Rogers has been able to change the lives of all those who have been fortunate to meet him.

For his exceptional efforts in his career, Dr. Rogers was recognized as the Dr. Janice A. Lumpkin Educator of the Year from the National Society of Black Engineers in 2018. He additionally received the 2019 Stanley Israel Award for Diversity in the Chemical Sciences from the American Chemical Society. Finally, Dr. Rogers was featured as an engineering education pioneer as part of Black History Month in the February 2020 issue of ASEE's PRISM magazine. Looking toward the future, Dr. Rogers plans to continue his success within his field.
