Dr. Guyton is the Zanvyl Krieger Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Beginning his career on the Baltimore campus in 1977, just one year after completing his residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, he was named the Chief of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Division. As an extension of his academic career, Dr. Guyton has served as the primary teacher of ophthalmic optics and clinical refraction throughout the U.S. since 1980, more than any other ophthalmologist in his field.
A pioneer of his time, Dr. Guyton is an expert in amblyopia, double vision, strabismus, strabismus surgery using adjustable sutures, ophthalmic optics, refractive errors, and ophthalmic instrumentation. He has conducted extensive research during his career and has gained international acclaim for his tireless efforts in the areas of clinical optics and strabismus. Dr. Guyton has been particularly interested in the mechanisms causing misalignment of the eyes, especially involving ocular torsion, which is the abnormal twisting of the eye around the line of sight.
Dr. Guyton has received several National Institutes of Health research grants in support of his work, having notably disseminated his studies in over 300 scholarly articles. In 1987 he authored the award-winning videotape "Retinoscopy: Plus Cylinder Technique." He has served on the editorial boards for several scientific journals, and holds 19 U.S. patents on ophthalmic diagnostic instruments. Dr. Guyton has also lectured and served as a keynote speaker on multiple occasions.
To better serve his community, Dr. Guyton has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco since 2012. Furthermore, his past associations include membership on the National Eye Institute's National Advisory Eye Council in Bethesda, MD, and the National Research Council's Committee on Vision in Washington, D.C. He has consulted for Mentor O&O Inc. in Norwood, Massachusetts, and for the American Optical Corporation in Southbridge, Massachusetts.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in physics at the University of Mississippi in 1965, Dr. Guyton earned his Doctor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1969, becoming the first of a record of 10 siblings to all become MDs. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include his internship in medicine at the University of Florida, his residency in ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University, and his fellowship in strabismus at the Baylor College of Medicine. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Guyton has been board certified in ophthalmology since 1977.
Dr. Guyton is an elected fellow of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees and president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Honored with a First Place Gold Award for Medical Imaging at the John Muir Medical Film Festival in 1988, Dr. Guyton has since received several other accolades. Among them, he earned the Alcon Research Institute Award in 1991, a Senior Scientific Investigator Award from Research to Prevent Blindness in 1995, and the Mildred Weisenfeld Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in 2007. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Guyton has been featured in the third and fifth editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
