Recognized for her long-term affiliation with Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, Dr. McKee has dedicated nearly five decades to research on many aspects of human vision, including color vision, motion perception, contrast sensitivity, binocular vision, and the vision abnormalities associated with amblyopia. She received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Vassar College, followed by graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received her doctorate in experimental psychology in 1970, under the guidance of her mentor, Professor Gerald Westheimer, OD, PhD, FRS.
Dr. McKee began her career as an instructor at St. Mary's College in Moraga, and then taught at California State University, Los Angeles and California Polytechnic State University Pomona. In 1971, she worked in the vision research laboratory at Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From 1974 until 1981, she was a research physiologist at the University of California, Berkeley. She then joined the research staff of Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute as a senior scientist, and ran her own laboratory there until her retirement in 2018. During her time at the Institute, Dr. McKee sat on review panels for the National Eye Institute - National Institutes of Health, and also the National Science Foundation. She also served as the chairperson of the National Research Council's Committee on Vision.
In addition to authoring more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, Dr. McKee served as the executive editor of the journal, Perception, from 1985 until 2009, and as an associate editor of the Journal of Vision from 2000 until 2007. She has served on the editorial boards of the journals: Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Vision Research, and Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics. She was Vice-President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and has been honored with many of the highest awards in her discipline, including the 2014 Edward D. Tillyer Award from the Optical Society of America, and the 2015 Davida Teller Award from the Vision Sciences Society. Dr. McKee credits her success to the support of her husband, Christopher McKee, her mentor, Gerald Westheimer, and to the women's group she has been part of for the last 40 years. She emphasizes the importance of supporting other women in the fields of science and technology.
