Jacobson, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Jacobson celebrates a tenure of nearly 35 years at the University at Buffalo. From 1986 to 1992, he established himself as an assistant professor before advancing to become an associate professor between 1992 and 1998. Dr. Jacobson continued his career at the University at Buffalo as a full-time professor, beginning in 1998. Since 2013, he has been recognized as a distinguished professor.

In addition to his contributions as an educator, Dr. Jacobson served in a multitude of administrative positions at the University at Buffalo. Notably, he was an associate dean at the Graduate School of Education from 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to 2010. He was named as the chairperson of the department of educational leadership and policy from 2001 until 2002 and as a director of the Center for Continuing Professional Education from 1997 to 2000. Additionally, Dr. Jacobson excelled as a coordinator of educational administration between the years of 1993 and 1997, from 2004 to 2006 and from 2009 until 2017.

Dr. Jacobson obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Brooklyn College in 1969 and 1975 respectively. He later earned a Master of Science from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1978. Ultimately, Dr. Jacobson received a Doctor of Philosophy from Cornell University in 1986, at which time he was honored with the Julian E. Butterworth Doctoral Research Award for his dissertation in the field of education, as well as the Jean Flanigan Dissertation Award for Outstanding Research in the Field of Educational Finance in 1987, presented by the American Education Finance Association, American Association of School Administrators and National Education Association.

During this time, he began his career as a special education teacher with the New York City Board of Education from 1970 to 1978 and worked with substance abusers at the Renaissance Project in Ellenville, N.Y. between 1976 and 1982.

Dr. Jacobson became involved in his profession due to his opposition to the Vietnam War. Since New York City had a shortage of teachers, he decided to apply his skills in psychology to receive an occupational deferment from the draft. At the time, he was working in a program with schizophrenic and autistic children. Though he initially thought he would become a therapist, when Dr. Jacobson began teaching he grew passionate for the profession.

Dr. Jacobson is the author of six books, over 35 book chapters, three commissioned reports and nearly 50 articles in peer-refereed journals. In addition, he has contributed as a guest editor to various peer-reviewed journals, and is the founder and editor of "Leadership and Policy in Schools," as well as the lead editor of "Research in Education: Implications for Policy and Practice." He is proud to have developed a leadership preparation program 'The Leadership Initiative For Tomorrow's Schools (LIFTS)", which has successfully trained over 300 school leaders since its inception in 1994.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Jacobson has received various accolades, including the University Council for Educational Administration Master Professor Award in 2020, the Hanne Mawhinny Distinguished Service Award in 2018, the Jack A. Culbertson Award for significant contributions by a junior professor to the advancement of educational administration in 1994, and the Emerald Group Publishing 'Highly Commended' Award twice, in 1998 and 2013. Furthermore, in 2019 he was recognized as a Fulbright Scholar in Educational Management and Leadership at Aleksander Moisiu University in Durres, Albania. In 2018, Dr. Jacobson was elected as a fellow of the Fund for the Advancement of Humanities and Social Sciences in Israel. He has also served as the President of the University Council for Educational Administration in 2007-08, and as the President of the American Educational Finance Association in 1999-2000.

Dr. Jacobson's career has taken him across the globe. Notably, he has been active a member of the MEd/PhD in Educational Leadership and Management Advisory Committee in Jamaica, the International Advisory Group for the None in Three Research Center in England, and a visiting scholar at the New Zealand Educational Administration and Leadership Society. Moreover, he is an active participant with many associations and councils. Additionally, Dr. Jacobson has chaired over 60 successful doctoral dissertations and served on the dissertation committees of nearly 50 students.
