He started his professional career as an Instructor then as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry - Faculty of Science at Cairo University (1969-1976). He relocated to the USA in 1976 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in organic chemistry from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1980.

After two postdoctoral appointments at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC (1981-82) and SmithKline Beckman Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, PA (1983-85), he joined Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) as a Teaching/Research Associate (1985-1986) then remained as Adjunct Professor (1986-2006).

He started his industrial career at the Process Chemistry Department of Wyeth Laboratories as Senior Chemist (1986-1987). He then joined the Process Chemistry Group at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development in 1987. He served as a Senior Scientist (1988-1990), Principal Scientist (1991-1994) and Research Fellow (1995-1997). In 1998 he was promoted to Senior Research Fellow and held this title until 2008. He served in multiple executive roles at the POCC including Chair in 1994. At the ACS, he was the first industrial scientist to serve as the Executive Officer and Chair of the National Organic Chemistry Symposium (NOS) when he organized the 39th symposium during 2003-2005. The symposium was held at the University of Utah in June 2005. He also served as the National Program Chair for the Division of Organic Chemistry from 2009 to 2014 and twice as a member of the Division of Organic Chemistry's Executive Committee (2003 to 2005 and 2009 to 2014). He is currently serving as a Patent Panelist for ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters (2012-Present).
