Having practiced law for more than 40 years, Mr. Russell has excelled as a partner at Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik in La Crosse since 1983. Affiliated with the firm since his graduation from law school, his vast background includes a record of success representing clients in business law, bankruptcy cases, and Social Security Disability. Working closely with business owners and farmers, Mr. Russell has also provided mediation services, and had cases before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.
Mr. Russell was a lecturer in business law for senior accounting students at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 2001 to 2019. Mr. Russell's education was at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, in 1979.
Participating in a plethora of organizations, Mr. Russell has been a volunteer mediator with the Wisconsin Farm Center since 1986. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse since 1997, where he was instrumental in the partnership with Viterbo University to construct a joint recreational facility, the first of its kind in the nation. Mr. Russell served on the Board of the La Crosse County Historical Society, and is a past president of the La Crosse Public Education Foundation. He is also a past president of the La Crosse County Bar Association, the Wisconsin State Curling Association, and the United States Curling Association.
For many years, Mr. Russell has served on the Board of Legal Action of Wisconsin, a statewide law firm serving low income people in 39 counties. In 2006, Mr. Russell founded the La Crosse County Bar Association Free Legal Clinic, which he still manages. Once a month, volunteer attorneys provide free legal advice to low-income people on a pro bono basis.
For his contributions to the field of law and his community, Mr. Russell was recognized with a State Bar Pro Bono Award in 1993, and the State Bar Leonard Loeb Award, for senior attorneys, in 2016. He was inducted into the local Boys & Girls Club Wall of Fame in 2007. In 2013, he received the Jefferson Award for Community Service, and attended a recognition event in Washington, D.C. He has been consistently honored among Wisconsin Super Lawyers since 2011, as well as an AV-Rated attorney through Martindale-Hubbell. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Russell has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law and the second edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
