Ronald L. Carlson Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    ATHENS, GA, May 14, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ronald L. Carlson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Carlson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Joining the University of Georgia (UGA) in 1984 as a John Byrd Martin professor of law, Mr. Carlson was later named as a Fuller E. Callaway professor of law on campus, where he taught two courses on evidence and trial practice for another nine years. He was subsequently bestowed with the distinguished title of a professor emeritus upon his retirement in 2001. Since that time, Mr. Carlson has remained active on the university's mock trial and moot court teams.

Boasting more than 19 years of expertise as an educator at Washington University in Saint Louis and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Mr. Carlson is also a former U.S. commissioner for the Southern District of Iowa and a former attorney, having represented Betty, Neuman, McMahon, Hellstrom & Bittner in Davenport, Iowa. During his years in law, he notably litigated a number of trial and appellate cases and argued important appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court.

As a leading authority in both education and legal service, Mr. Carlson served as an interdisciplinary law lecturer at Ohio State University in 2009 and was a Founder's Day lecturer at UGA in 2005. He was also a visiting professor at several other institutions throughout his career, including the University of Tennessee, the Ohio State University, St. Louis University, Wayne State University and the University of Texas. Other achievements to his credit include serving as a moderator of the Robert Vance Forum on the Bill of Rights from 1990 to 1996 and again between 2002 and 2003. Likewise, he was a consultant on behalf of the legislative committee of the Criminal Code Revision of Iowa. Additionally, Mr. Carlson has provided commentary to the media on various high-profile cases, led various seminars for judges and attorneys throughout the state of Georgia, and has spoken at continuing legal education seminars throughout the country, including the "Objections at Trial" program, which included traveling to 70 different cities through the U.S. alongside a colleague.

A prolific author, Mr. Carlson has published more than 20 legal books on criminal procedure and trial practice and evidence, including two with his son, Michael Carlson, an Executive District Attorney in the office of the Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney. One book is titled "Carlson on Evidence," which is now in its sixth edition. Other books to Ronald Carlson's credit include "Objections at Trial: A Concise Guide" with co-author M. Bright and E. Imwinkelried in 2020, "Dynamics of Trial Practice: Problems and Materials" in 2020 with co-author E. Imwinkelried and "Georgia Objections at Trial' in 2015 with co-authors E. Imwinkelried and V. Reynolds. Mr. Carlson has also contributed numerous scholarly legal articles to a variety of professional journals as well.

A dedicated civic advocate on behalf of his local community, Mr. Carlson briefly served as the vice president of the alumni board for Augustana College during 1968, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Northwestern University as a Clarion DeWitt Hardy law scholar in 1959, followed by a Master of Laws at Georgetown University as an E. Barrett Prettyman law scholar in 1961. Mr. Carlson has been admitted to practice law by the Iowa and Illinois courts and before the Supreme Court of the United States. He is also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.

Supported by several profession related organizations, Mr. Carlson is a member and 2000 Harrison Tweed Award recipient of the American Bar Association and a 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient via the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. He has also been prolifically involved with the Federal Bar Association, where he chaired the law school division and was a 1992 Earl W. Kinter Award recipient. Additionally, Mr. Carlson is a founding member of the Joseph Henry Lumpkin American Inn of Court and a former director of the Federal Practice Institute. With respect to academia, he remains active as a former director of the UGA Distinguished Advocate Series and a charter member of the UGA Teaching Academy.

In honor of his accomplishments, Mr. Carlson received the Roscoe Pound Foundation's Richard S. Jacobson Award in 1987 for his teachings in trial advocacy. He was also recognized with multiple teaching awards, including UGA's Josiah Meigs Award for Teaching Excellence. Likewise, he received the prestigious Earl W. Kinter Award in 1992, which is the Federal Bar Association's highest honor for distinguished service to the federal bar. More recently, Mr. Carlson earned the Education Leadership Award from the Institute of Continuing Education in 2015, which was presented to him at the Superior Court Judicial Conference.
