Dr. Kay has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of geochemistry and higher education

ITHACA, NY, May 24, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Robert Woodbury Kay with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kay celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A renowned geochemist who spent the majority of his career in higher education, Dr. Kay earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus at Cornell University in 2016. Well-known for his work on the operation of large-scale earth systems within the context of plate tectonics, his 46-year tenure in the classroom focused on teaching the integration of the methodologies of mass flux, particularly by use of chemical and isotopic tracers.

During the course of Dr. Kay's employment with Cornell, he progressed from an assistant to an associate and full professor of geological sciences and served as the director of undergraduate studies from 1996 to 2016. He also briefly taught at his alma mater, Columbia University, for four years, beginning in 1970. Likewise, Dr. Kay earned distinction as a research geophysicist at the University of California Los Angeles between 1974 and 1975. An alumnus of Brown University, Dr. Kay received a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He was subsequently accepted to Columbia University, where he completed additional studies, including a Doctor of Philosophy in 1970.

Dr. Kay's research interests and efforts have included the geochemical and petrologic aspects of the formation, modification and destruction of the earth's crust. He also completed extensive research on ophiolites, which are pieces of oceanic plate that have propelled onto the edge of continental plates, and, among other studies, recently studied radionuclides with respect to soil erosion and hydrofracking water. As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Kay contributed numerous scholarly articles to professional journals. Among his over 10,000 citations listed by ISI, in particular, his paper on Ocean Ridge Volcanic Rocks was recognized as a "citation classic" by ISI in 1986. His work has also been recognized on Google Scholar.

Although Dr. Kay no longer teaches, he has continued to serve as a member of the Lamont advisory board member at Columbia University since 2005. Other commitments to his credit include activity on the executive committee and U.S. Science advisory committee of the Joint Oceanology Institution and on the executive committee of the Ward Nuclear Center. Elected by his peers, Dr. Kay was named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America. He is also a prominent member of the Geochemical Society. He would like to acknowledge his mentor Wallace Broecker (Professor Emeritus, 2017), Paul Gast, Jack Oliver and his wife, Suzanne Mahlburg Kay (Professor Emeritus at Cornell University).
