Morrison, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A distinguished cartographer and geographer who is renowned for his expertise, Dr. Morrison retired as a professor of geography and the director of the Center for Mapping at the Ohio State University in 2003. Having worked for the aforementioned university for five years, he previously found success with the U.S. Census Bureau in Washington as the chief of the geography division and the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia as a senior science advisor for geography and the assistant division chief of research. In addition to his appointment at the Ohio State University, Dr. Morrison was active as an adjunct professor at the University Maryland in College Park between 1983 and 1987.

Between 1968 and 1983, Dr. Morrison excelled at the University of Wisconsin, operating as a professor of geography and department chairman. Contributing to the board of directors of the International Union of Surveying and Mapping and the National Center for Geological Information and Analysis, he also served as a U.S. representative to the Commission on Cartographic Communication for the International Cartographic Association. Additionally, Dr. Morrison held the position of the chairman of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

A profound writer, Dr. Morrison was noted as a senior author of the sixth edition of "Elements of Cartography" in 1995 as well as the co-editor and co-author of "Elements of Spatial Data Quality" in the same year. He has also provided his wealth of knowledge to articles published in numerous journals and chapters featured in several books. A frequent speaker in his respective fields, Dr. Morrison further flourished in various editorial roles, including as the editor-in-chief of Mapping and Remote Sensing and both an associate editor and senior consultant for Goode's World Atlas. He frequently reviewed grant applications for the National Science Foundation and chaired a task force which produced the book. "Beyond Mapping: The Challenges of New Technolgies in the Geographic Information Sciences"forthe National Academies, Washington D.C.

Dr. Morrison initially earned a Bachelor of Art in mathematics, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1962. He concluded his studies at the University of Wisconsin, from which he obtained a master's degree in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. The past president of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping and the International Cartography Association, Dr. Morrison has been notably affiliated with the Association of American Geographers, AM/FM International, the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association and the Cosmos Club.

Furthermore, Dr. Morrison was recognized as a National Defense Education Act Title IV fellow from 1962 to 1965. He was presented the James R. Anderson Medal of Honor in Applied Geography in 1996, in 2004 the Meredith F. Burrill award by the Association of American Geographers, and in Beijing 2001, the Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal from the International Cartographic Association for his leadership in World Cartography.. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Morrison has been cited in the 50th through 54th editions of Who's Who in America.
