During his sophomore year at Harvard University, Dr. Boehm undertook an internship at General Dynamics, where he specialized in digital mathematics. Having never worked in computer programming, he instantly became interested in the subject. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Harvard University, he joined the computer science department and information science department of Rand Corporation. Dr. Boehm went on to receive a Master of Science in mathematics from the University of California Los Angeles and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from the University of California Los Angeles.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Boehm has held research positions with TRW Defense Systems Group and the Defense Advanced Research Agency of the Department of Defense. He also briefly found success as the honorary chair professor at Hanglow Dianzi University. Presently, Dr. Boehm is the director and chief scientist of the Department of Defense Systems Engineer Research Center. He is also a distinguished professor and TRW professor of software engineering at the Center for Software Engineering at the University of Southern California.
In addition to his primary professional endeavors, Dr. Boehm has served as the chairperson of the board of visitors at the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. As a respected voice in his field, he has authored and edited more than 500 professional papers and books. Dr. Boehm has also served as a board member of numerous scientific journals.
Dr. Boehm was presented with an honorary Doctor of Science in computer science and software engineering from the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an honorary Doctor of Science in computer science from the University of Massachusetts. Over the span of his career, he is most proud to have worked with many different organizations in his field. Most notably, Dr. Boehm was proud of his contributions in various research fields, including constructive cost modeling and the win-win approach to requirements engineering, among others.
For his efforts, Dr. Boehm was most recently named as the Professor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals. Previously, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Software Engineering Education, the Stevens Software Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award, the Simon Ramo Systems Engineering Medal, the H.D. Mills Award and the American Society for Quality Control Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received the Distinguished Research Award in Software Engineering from the Association for Computing Machinery, the Freiman Award from the International Society of Parametric Analysts and the Warnier Prize from Society Software Analysts. For his research in the field, he has received grants from 30 industrial organizations. Looking toward the future, Dr. Boehm plans to continue his research and reap the fruits of his success.
