Mr. Herpst has been Of Counsel to the boutique law firm of Borteck & Czapek PC since 2019, where his combined 50 years of business and legal experience is applied to bring efficacious solutions to issues impacting firm clients facing complex legal issues relating to their business interests. He has demonstrated focused and driven leadership during a career spanning stints of entrepreneurship, executive management and decades of experience as a corporate attorney. Mr. Herpst's entrepreneurial and management skills were instrumental to the growth of International Crystal Laboratories, an international optical devices company located in Garfield, New Jersey, which focuses on the analytical chemistry, laser and fiber optics markets. There, he held various leadership positions between 1982 and 2017, including as President, Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the Board of Directors. He served as Associate General Counsel, Division Counsel and Corporate Counsel for the BOC Group Inc. from 1977 until 1982, where his practice focused on mergers, acquisitions, international transactions, antitrust and other aspects of the law, including on-site negotiation of scores of deals in dozens of countries worldwide. He lent his expertise to various other industries as well, and notably played an active role on the board of supervisors for Solaris Optics SA from 2006 to 2011 during Poland's transition from state ownership to capitalism and democratic rule.
Apart from his legal and professional commitments, Mr. Herpst has been granted ten U.S. and corresponding foreign patents in the fields of materials science, spectroscopy and industrial lasers. In honor of his accomplishments, Mr. Herpst was selected for the Cornelius W. Wickersham Award for Constitution Law in 1972.
Mr. Herpst has been actively engaged as a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Mahwah, New Jersey, for over a decade. From 2010 to 2012, he chaired the church's financial council. Today, he serves as the chairperson of the parish capital campaign, and has been a member of the finance council since 2008, as well as the RCIA coordinator and a catechist since 2018.
To prepare for his esteemed career, Mr. Herpst received a Bachelor of Science at New York University in 1969 where he was a member of the School of Commerce Honors Program. He was subsequently accepted to Rutgers Law School, where he was Notes & Comments Editor of Rutgers Law Review and graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1972. Mr. Herpst has been admitted to practice law by the New Jersey Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States.
